Unphysical discontinuities, intruder states and regularization in GW methods

Enzo Monino et al.

Summary: By recasting the non-linear frequency-dependent GW quasiparticle equation into a linear eigenvalue problem, this study explains the occurrence of multiple solutions and unphysical discontinuities in various physical quantities computed within the GW approximation. The GW self-energy is treated as an effective Hamiltonian, which reveals the key signatures of strong correlation in the (N +/- 1)-electron states and their direct relation to the intruder state problem. A regularization procedure inspired by the similarity renormalization group is proposed to avoid these issues and accelerate the convergence of partially self-consistent GW calculations.

Regularized CASPT2: an Intruder-State-Free Approach

Stefano Battaglia et al.

Summary: In this work, a new approach called sigma(p)-CASPT2 based on sigma p regularization is proposed to fix the intruder-state problem (ISP) in CASPT2. The effectiveness of sigma(p)-CASPT2 in removing the ISP and the sensitivity of the approach to input parameters are analyzed and compared to previous techniques. It is found that sigma p- CASPT2 performs better compared to previous approaches and different versions have different potential applications. The analysis also reveals the unsuitability of the real level shift technique as a general way to avoid the ISP.

A Mountaineering Strategy to Excited States: Revising Reference Values with EOM-CC4

Pierre-Francois Loos et al.

Summary: In this study, the possibilities of the equation-of-motion formalism relying on the approximate fourth-order coupled-cluster (CC) method, CC4, for determining highly accurate vertical excitation energies in small organic compounds are explored. It is demonstrated that CC4 is an excellent approximation to CCSDTQ for excited states with a dominant contribution from single excitations, with an average deviation of 0.003 eV. Additive basis set correction schemes are also assessed and found to be beneficial, with their accuracy depending on the specific scheme. Furthermore, CC4 is used to improve theoretical best estimates of vertical excitation energies in the QUEST database for molecules containing between four and six (nonhydrogen) atoms.

Summary: By factorizing the matrix elements of the Dyall Hamiltonian, the computational bottleneck caused by explicit evaluation of high-order density matrices is avoided, leading to improved efficiency. Excited-State Absorption of Uracil in the Gas Phase: Mapping the Main Decay Paths by Different Electronic Structure Methods

Daniil A. Fedotov et al.

Summary: This study examines the computational predictions of one-photon and excited-state absorption spectra of uracil, comparing six different linear response electronic structure methods. The spectral shapes predicted by some methods are fairly similar, although there may be slight deterioration in quality in the high-energy region. Insight into the shift of ESA spectra on different potential energy surfaces is obtained, revealing that despite 1 pi having larger ESA, some regions are dominated by signals from the 1n state.

Multiconfiguration Pair-Density Functional Theory

Prachi Sharma et al.

Summary: Kohn-Sham density functional theory is less accurate for strongly correlated systems compared to weakly correlated systems. The available functionals for spin densities do not accurately predict energies for strongly correlated systems when using multiconfigurational wave functions with spin symmetry. Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory overcomes these limitations by using a functional of the total density and on-top pair density, allowing efficient calculation of energy for strongly correlated systems.

Multireference Algebraic Diagrammatic Construction Theory for Excited States: Extended Second-Order Implementation and Benchmark

Ilia M. Mazin et al.

Summary: This study presents a new implementation and benchmark of approximations in multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory for simulations of neutral electronic excitations and UV/vis spectra of strongly correlated molecular systems. The results demonstrate that the proposed MR-ADC methods outperform third-order single-reference ADC approximation for weakly correlated electronic states and are competitive with equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory results. For states with multireference character, the performance of the MR-ADC methods is similar to that of N-electron valence perturbation theory.
