Ab Initio Static Exchange-Correlation Kernel across Jacob?s Ladder without Functional Derivatives

Zhandos Moldabekov et al.

Summary: This article presents a method for computing the system-specific static exchange-correlation (XC) kernel within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) exclusively, without the need for functional derivatives or external inputs. The comparison with exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) data provides insights into the performance of different XC functionals and implications for the development of new functionals for extreme-temperature applications. In addition, new DFT results for the XC kernel of warm dense hydrogen are obtained, demonstrating the capability of the framework to capture nontrivial effects in the density response.

Non-empirical Mixing Coefficient for Hybrid XC Functionals from Analysis of the XC Kernel

Zhandos A. Moldabekov et al.

Summary: We analyze the static exchange-correlation (XC) kernel computed from hybrid functionals with a single mixing coefficient. The hybrid XC kernels are broken down into exchange and correlation parts using different functionals. This analysis provides physical insights into the effect of the mixing coefficient in hybrid functionals and has practical value for its non-empirical choice under different conditions.

Physical insights from imaginary-time density-density correlation functions

Tobias Dornheim et al.

Summary: An accurate theoretical description of the dynamic properties of correlated quantum many-body systems, such as the dynamic structure factor S(q, omega), is important in many fields. It is argued that the analytic continuation from the imaginary-time domain to real frequencies is often unnecessary because the physical information is already contained in the density-density correlation function F(q, tau). Key information can be directly extracted from the tau domain, which is relevant for equation-of-state measurements of matter under extreme conditions.

Ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations of hydrogen snapshots at warm dense matter conditions

Maximilian Boehme et al.

Summary: We employ a combination of ab initio path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations and fixed ion configurations from density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations to solve the electronic problem for hydrogen under warm dense matter conditions. By utilizing the pair approximation and comparing it with the Kelbg pair potential, we avoid the problem of path collapse due to Coulomb attraction and observe favorable convergence behavior with the former. Despite being affected by the fermion sign problem, our PIMC simulations provide an exact benchmark for other methods and approximations within DFT. Our unique setup allows us to study important properties of warm dense hydrogen without any model assumptions, which has significant value for various applications such as interpreting experiments and developing new XC functionals.

Screening of a test charge in a free-electron gas at warm dense matter and dense non-ideal plasma conditions

Zhandos A. Moldabekov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the screening of a test charge by partially degenerate non-ideal free electrons under conditions related to warm dense matter and dense plasmas, using linear response theory and local field correction based on ab initio Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations data. The analysis of the obtained results compares to random phase approximation and Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander approximation, while also investigating the applicability of the long-wavelength approximation for describing screening effects. The impact of electronic exchange-correlations effects on structural properties and the use of screened potential for simulating ion dynamics are discussed as well.

Thermal excitation signals in the inhomogeneous warm dense electron gas

Zhandos A. Moldabekov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the emergence of electronic excitations from the inhomogeneous electronic structure at warm dense matter parameters using first-principles calculations. The emerging modes, which include satellite signals, transformation of plasmons to optical modes, and double-plasmon modes, exhibit a significant dependence on temperature. These modes have the potential to be valuable for diagnosing plasma parameters in the warm dense matter regime.

Towards a quantum fluid theory of correlated many-fermion systems from first principles

Z. A. Moldabekov et al.

Summary: This article discusses correlated many-fermion systems in warm dense matter, plasmonics, and ultracold atoms. The authors introduce quantum hydrodynamics (QHD) as a complementary first-principles method for many-fermion systems at larger scales, and investigate the failure of the standard Bohm potential under strong perturbations. They propose extending QHD to this regime using the many-fermion Bohm potential based on first-principles, which may improve the accuracy of QHD simulations in the presence of strong perturbations at unattainable scales.

Density Functional Theory Perspective on the Nonlinear Responseof Correlated Electrons across Temperature Regimes

Zhandos Moldabekov et al.

Summary: This paper explores a new formalism based on KS-DFT to study the nonlinear electronic density response at partially and strongly quantum degenerate regimes. The results demonstrate that KS-DFT calculations can accurately reproduce path integral Monte Carlo simulation results for warm dense matter. The analytical results for the quadratic response function closely agree with the KS-DFT data, while the existing analytical formulas for the cubic response function cannot accurately describe simulation results.

Effective electronic forces and potentials from ab initio path integral Monte Carlo simulations

Tobias Dornheim et al.

Summary: The rigorous description of correlated quantum many-body systems is a challenging task. In this work, extensive and accurate ab initio path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) results are presented for the effective interaction and force between two electrons in the uniform electron gas. Finite-size effects are directly observed, leading to possibilities for novel domain decompositions and methodological advances. Furthermore, numerical evidence of effective attraction between two electrons, without the mediation of an underlying ionic structure, is provided. The usefulness of the exact PIMC results in describing the dynamic structure factor is demonstrated through comparison with effective potentials from linear-response theory.

Summary: Warm dense matter is a highly active research area that combines material science and plasma physics. This study evaluates the performance of commonly used exchange-correlation approximations in warm dense spin-polarized electron gas. The results suggest a decrease in predictive accuracy with decreasing density and increasing density perturbation. Recommendations for the applicability of XC functionals in warm dense matter conditions are provided, along with possibilities for constructing more accurate XC functionals in the future.

This study assesses common XC functionals against exact path-integral Monte Carlo calculations, revealing where these functionals are applicable and where they fail under perturbations on electronic structures. The research highlights the lack of XC functionals that meet the needs of WDM physics.

Summary: A new analytical approach was developed to predict the ionization potential depression (IPD) in multicomponent dense plasmas by considering the self-energy of ions and electrons. The incorporation of effective static approximation of local field correction (LFC) within the IPD framework through dynamical structure factor showed nontrivial influence on IPD in warm/hot dense matter conditions. Additionally, a new screening factor was obtained from the density distribution of free electrons calculated within the average-atom model, demonstrating excellent agreements with other methods and experiments.

Ab initio path integral Monte Carlo approach to the momentum distribution of the uniform electron gas at finite temperature without fixed nodes

Summary: This study presents extensive new ab initio path integral Monte Carlo results for the momentum distribution function n(k) of the uniform electron gas in the warm dense matter regime, allowing for the investigation of the nontrivial increase of low-momentum states around the Fermi temperature and its connection to the lowering of kinetic energy compared to the ideal Fermi gas. The impact of quantum statistics on n(k) and the off-diagonal density matrix in coordinate space was also explored, showing its significance even in the strongly coupled electron liquid regime. These results, derived without any nodal constraints, provide a benchmark for other methods and approximations.
