Thin film breakage in oil-in-water emulsions, a multidisciplinary study

Ola Aaroen et al.

Summary: Coalescence is a critical phenomenon in separation and transport processes, and understanding it can improve models predicting emulsion stability and separation. This study used optical tweezers and molecular simulation to investigate thin film rupture in coalescence events, identifying a potential relationship between disruption of the electrical double layer and nanocrystal formation with thin film breakage times and depletion forces.

Exchanging Replicas with Unequal Cost, Infinitely and Permanently

Sander Roet et al.

Summary: We developed a replica exchange method that can be effectively parallelized even when the computational cost of the Monte Carlo moves in the parallel replicas are considerably different. By changing the conceptual viewpoint and applying a recent algorithm, we were able to effectively increase exchange rate without exponential growth. The combination of this method with RETIS was tested and proven effective on three model systems.

Exploring the effects of approach velocity on depletion force and coalescence in oil-in-water emulsions

Ola Aaroen et al.

Summary: An emulsion is a thermodynamically unstable system consisting of at least two immiscible liquid phases, with one dispersed as droplets of varying size in the other. While most studies on emulsions have focused on larger droplets, the properties of smaller droplets are crucial for understanding emulsion behavior in various applications. Optical tweezers can be used to examine unstable emulsions and study the effects of system parameters on depletion force and coalescence times.
