Sulfur infiltration and allotrope formation in porous cathode hosts for lithium-sulfur batteries

Sean Grabe et al.

Summary: The study investigates sulfur infiltration and formation of lower order allotropes in heated porous hosts during fabrication of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery cathodes. A novel continuum-level model is presented, incorporating heat transfer and sulfur infiltration, while considering the pore size distribution. Simulations confirm the existence of linear S-6 and S-4 in ultramicropores.

Kinetics of sulphur dissolution in lithium-sulphur batteries

Matthew Dent et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dissolution kinetics of solid sulphur in DOL:DME solution and presents a novel model for sulphur dissolution and electrolyte impregnation. The results show that solid sulphur has fast dissolution kinetics at 20°C but low solubility, which limits its dissolution. In addition, swelling of the solid sulphur region was observed and the diffusion coefficient of the DOL:DME solution in the solid sulphur was determined.

Measurement of the Heat Transfer Properties of Carbon Fabrics via Infrared Thermal Mapping

Phillip Kearney et al.

Summary: This paper aims to determine the heat transfer properties of biaxial carbon fabrics with different architectures. The specific heat capacity was determined using differential scanning calorimetry, while a novel method of numerical analysis using a thermal camera was investigated for measuring thermal diffusivity and conductivity. The results showed that the thermal conductivity parallel to the fibers of a non-crimp stitch bonded fabric matched well with the theoretical value, while voids in woven fabrics led to reduced transverse thermal conductivity.

Life Cycle Assessment of an NMC Battery for Application to Electric Light-Duty Commercial Vehicles and Comparison with a Sodium-Nickel-Chloride Battery

Antonella Accardo et al.

Summary: The study found that the NMC111 battery has the highest environmental impacts during the production stage, with active cathode material, Aluminium, Copper, and energy use for battery production being the main contributors. However, during vehicle operation, the NMC111-BEV showed lower environmental impacts compared to the ZEBRA-BEV. Electric powertrains outperform diesel ones in terms of global warming, abiotic depletion potential-fossil fuels, photochemical oxidation, and ozone layer depletion, but diesel vehicles perform better in most other impact categories.
