Recent Developments in Nitric Oxide Donors and Delivery for Antimicrobial and Anti-Biofilm Applications

Wee Han Poh et al.

Summary: The use of nitric oxide (NO) shows promise as a novel approach for treating antibiotic resistant bacteria and biofilm infections. Different strategies have been developed to overcome the limitations of NO's reactivity and enable controlled release, including the design of NO-releasing materials and encapsulation of NO donors. This review summarizes recent developments and discusses limitations and variability in biological responses to the use of NO for bacterial eradication.

Potent, Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Effects of S-Nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine-Impregnated Nitric Oxide-Releasing Latex Urinary Catheters

Megan Douglass et al.

Summary: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) remain a major source of hospital-acquired infections. This study demonstrated the successful loading of a nitric oxide (NO) donor into latex catheters, which showed stable noncytotoxic release characteristics and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, offering great potential for reducing the impact of CAUTIs.

Surface-Catalyzed Nitric Oxide Release via a Metal Organic Framework Enhances Antibacterial Surface Effects

Mark Garren et al.

Summary: The combination of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and NO donors can effectively accelerate the release rate of NO for therapeutic applications, preventing biofilm formation on medical devices. Through intrapolymeric interactions, tunable NO surface fluxes can elicit different cytotoxic responses in human cell lines, showing potential for application-specific tailoring. Enhanced NO release from the composite materials was found to significantly reduce bacterial growth, indicating a promising approach for combating opportunistic bacteria.
