Multiscale mechanobiology: Coupling models of adhesion kinetics and nonlinear tissue mechanics

Yifan Guo et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of tissues at different scales plays a crucial role in processes such as wound healing. In this study, a multiscale model is developed to capture the relationship between cellular activity and tissue mechanics. The model successfully captures the mechanical response of biopolymers, contractile stresses generated by cells, and stress-strain contours observed during wound healing.

Structural origins of cartilage shear mechanics

Thomas Wyse Jackson et al.

Summary: This study presents experiments and theory that explain the structural origins of the shear properties of articular cartilage through the mechanical interdependence of collagen and aggrecan networks in its extracellular matrix. The study also highlights the importance of slight changes in collagen and aggrecan concentrations near the cartilage surface, which can significantly weaken its modulus and potentially lead to tissue collapse.

Investigating the effects of activation state and location on lower limb tissue stiffness

Matija Bosnic et al.

Summary: The study revealed that lower limb tissue stiffness is influenced by various factors, including location and muscle activation status. The tissue stiffness of the shank was significantly higher than that of the thigh, regardless of activation status.

Glycosaminoglycans modulate long-range mechanical communication between cells in collagen networks

Xingyu Chen et al.

Summary: Cells can sense and respond to mechanical forces in fibrous extracellular matrices, and this phenomenon, known as long-range force transmission, is influenced by the presence of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the matrix. GAGs increase the stiffness of the collagen network and hinder the alignment of collagen fibers, thus impeding cellular force transmission over long distances.

Nuclear Stiffness Decreases with Disruption of the Extracellular Matrix in Living Tissues

Kaitlin P. McCreery et al.

Summary: The reciprocal interactions between the cell nucleus and the extracellular matrix influence macroscale tissue phenotype changes. Enzymatic disruption of the tissue matrix is hypothesized to result in softer tissue, impacting the stiffness of embedded cell and nuclear structures. An atomic force microscopy needle-tip probe technique is expanded to measure nuclear and cell membrane stiffness in native tissue without perturbing the tissue structure.

Constitutive modeling of the anterior cruciate ligament bundles and patellar tendon with full-field methods

Callan M. Luetkemeyer et al.

Summary: This study used full-volume, full-field, finite deformation methods to build material models for ovine ACL bundles and patellar tendon. The research found that while most constitutive parameters were consistent among all specimen groups, parameters describing the degree of anisotropy, or collagen fiber alignment, showed statistically significant differences between groups.

Tissue-specific parameters for the design of ECM-mimetic biomaterials

Olivia R. Tonti et al.

Summary: The extracellular matrix (ECM) is crucial for directing cell behavior and maintaining tissue function. While advancements in technology allow for better in vitro modeling of tissue properties, tissue-specific variations in ECM composition are often overlooked. This review highlights the importance of considering the complexity of ECM in different tissues to better emulate human pathologies in in vitro models.

The mechanical properties of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articular cartilage in compression depend on anatomical regions

Heng Li et al.

Summary: The articular cartilage in the knee joint can be anatomically divided into different regions, with distinct mechanical properties observed among these regions. Histological analysis and the use of constitutive models help to explain the differences in cartilage properties, with the Fung and Ogden models found to be suitable for representing the effects of strain rate on stiffening.

Atomic force microscopy reveals the mechanical properties of breast cancer bone metastases

Xinyue Chen et al.

Summary: The study quantified the micro-mechanical properties of metastatic breast tumors and their surrounding bone microenvironment using atomic force microscopy. It found that metastatic tumors have extremely low elastic modulus and viscosity, making them significantly more compliant than 2D in vitro cultured cancer cells and subcutaneous tumor explants. These findings demonstrate the utility of atomic force microscopy in studying complex tissues and provide new insights into the mechanical properties of cancer metastases in bone.
