Neuroprotective Effect of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor on Motoneurons of the Oculomotor System

Silvia Silva-Hucha et al.

Summary: VEGF, initially known as a potent angiogenic factor, also plays a crucial role as a neuroprotective factor in the nervous system. A deficit of VEGF is related to motoneuronal degeneration, like in ALS. Oculomotor system motoneurons show higher levels of VEGF and are more resistant to injury and neurodegenerative diseases compared to other motoneurons.
