Middle Triassic to Late Jurassic climate change on the northern margin of the South China Plate: Insights from chemical weathering indices and clay mineralogy

Xianduo Dai et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the major, trace and rare earth element compositions and clay mineralogy of mudstones from the northern margin of the South China Plate to evaluate weathering intensity and reconstruct climate variability from the Middle Triassic to the Late Jurassic. Findings suggest a dominant humid climate from the latest Triassic to the early Middle Jurassic, while a seasonally arid climate characterized by low chemical weathering indices prevailed in the pre-Late Triassic and post-Middle Jurassic periods. The study indicates that PCO2 variations, the megamonsoon effect, plate motion, and regional topography all played roles in the observed climate changes during the early Mesozoic.

Reconstruction of the early-middle Jurassic source-to-sink system in the western Qaidam Basin (North Tibet): Constraints from zircon U-Pb ages of Jurassic sediments and granites

Jinglian Yuan et al.

Summary: This study used 745 detrital zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages from the Heishuigou and Mangya sections in the western Qaidam Basin to trace the provenances of Jurassic sediments and to further constrain the tectonic evolution of the Qaidam Basin. The results indicate that the South Altyn Tagh Range and the South Qilian Range were the main sources of sediment during the early to middle Jurassic in the western Qaidam Basin.

Paleo-Environment Reconstruction of the Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation, Southeastern Junggar Basin, NW China: Implications for the Mechanism of Organic Matter Enrichment in Ancient Lake

Dawei Cheng et al.

Summary: The study focused on the Lucaogou Formation in the southeastern Junggar Basin. Analysis of sedimentology, major and trace elements, mineral components and total organic carbon contents revealed different depositional environments and organic matter accumulation mechanisms in the upper and lower units. The lower unit was influenced by primary productivity, while the upper unit was controlled by redox conditions.

Sedimentology of the continental end-Permian extinction event in the Sydney Basin, eastern Australia

Christopher R. Fielding et al.

Summary: The Upper Permian to Lower Triassic coastal plain successions of the Sydney Basin in eastern Australia have been investigated to assess palaeoenvironmental changes. Explosive volcanic eruptions during the late Permian and some during the Early Triassic influenced these basins, providing high-resolution age determination. The end-Permian Extinction marked the shift towards better-drained alluvial conditions into the Early Triassic, with no immediate aridification after the extinction event.

The Sr/Ba ratio response to salinity in clastic sediments of the Yangtze River Delta

Aihua Wang et al.

Summary: The Sr/Ba ratio is a geochemical indicator used to distinguish between terrestrial and marine sedimentary environments, but its usability is not widely acknowledged due to inconsistent conclusions drawn from other sedimentary environment indicators. Selective extraction of sedimentogenic Sr and Ba is the most effective means of using the Sr/Ba ratio to discriminate between marine and terrestrial sedimentary environments in terrigenous clastic sediments.
