Surface electron doping induced double gap opening in T d-WTe2

Qi-Yuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic evolution of T (d)-WTe2 through in-situ surface alkali K atoms deposition using scanning tunneling microscopy. The results show that the T (d)-WTe2 surface is electron doped upon K deposition, and as the K coverage increases, two gaps are opened near Fermi energy, indicating two phase transitions during electron doping. The study also suggests that the smaller gap, which can be suppressed by a magnetic field, may correspond to the superconducting transition. These findings reveal rich quantum states in T (d)-WTe2 that are closely related to carrier concentration.

Room-temperature ferroelectric switching of spin-to-charge conversion in germanium telluride

Sara Varotto et al.

Summary: The ferroelectric polarization in epitaxial germanium telluride films can be used to control spin-to-charge conversion through electrical gating. The conversion magnitude is similar to that observed with platinum, but the charge current sign is controlled by the orientation of ferroelectric polarization. The inverse spin Hall effect plays a major role in switchable conversion, as indicated by the comparison between theoretical and experimental data.

Highly persistent spin textures with giant tunable spin splitting in the two-dimensional germanium monochalcogenides

Moh. Adhib Ulil Absor et al.

Summary: The emergence of persistent spin texture (PST) in two-dimensional (2D) germanium monochalcogenides (GeMC) is reported using first-principles density functional theory calculations, which could be potentially applied in spintronic devices. Different PST characteristics are observed in pure GeX and Janus Ge-2 XY monolayers, where the spin orientation is enforced by the lower point group symmetry of the crystal and can be tuned by spin-orbit coupling parameters and in-plane strain. The large spin-orbit coupling parameter leads to a small wavelength of the spatially periodic mode of the spin polarization, showing promise for short spin channels in spin Hall transistor devices.

Phase competition and negative piezoelectricity in interlayer-sliding ferroelectric ZrI2

Ning Ding et al.

Summary: The study of ZrI2 bulk reveals that its beta phase exhibits considerable out-of-plane polarization, while its negative longitudinal piezoelectricity is dominantly contributed by the enhanced dipole of ZrI2 layers, which is a unique characteristic of interlayer-sliding ferroelectricity.

Low-symmetry topological materials for large charge-to-spin interconversion: The case of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers

Marc Vila et al.

Summary: This study reveals a novel canted spin Hall effect in few-layer MoTe2 and WTe2 materials, characterized by in-plane and out-of-plane spin polarizations. The decreased symmetry of these materials leads to a large gate-tunable figure of merit for the spin Hall effect, showing potential for applications in spintronic devices.

Reversible spin textures with giant spin splitting in two-dimensional GaXY (X = Se, Te; Y = Cl, Br, I) compounds for a persistent spin helix

Siti Amalia Sasmito et al.

Summary: The study reveals a new class of 2D materials with in-plane ferroelectricity, inducing out-of-plane spin textures in the topmost valence band with giant spin splitting. These out-of-plane spin textures can be fully reversed by switching the direction of the in-plane ferroelectric polarization, offering potential for efficient and nonvolatile spintronic devices.

Resonant band engineering of ferroelectric tunnel junctions

Jing Su et al.

Summary: The proposal of energy band engineering as a means to enhance tunneling electroresistance in ferroelectric tunnel junctions shows promising results in controlling the conductance states depending on the polarization orientation. This approach involves the use of an ultrathin dielectric layer with a smaller band gap embedded in the ferroelectric barrier layer, leading to a giant ON/OFF conductance ratio for potential device applications.

Summary: This study introduces a new design principle to achieve ferroelastic ferroelectricity through van der Waals interaction in a bilayer lattice. It is found that the bilayer ZrI2 exhibits both out-of-plane and in-plane polarizations, along with 120 degrees ferroelasticity, achieving ferroelastic-ferroelectric multiferroics.

Large band splitting with tunable spin polarization in the two-dimensional ferroelectric GaXY family (X = Se, Te; Y = Cl, Br, I)

Moh Adhib Ulil Absor et al.

Summary: This study reveals the band splitting with vanishing spin polarization (BSVSP) effect in two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric GaXY family, demonstrating the origin and controllability of this effect through external electric fields. The cancellation of local spin polarization in split bands is found to be enforced by non-pseudo-polar point group symmetry, highlighting the potential for electrically tunable spin polarization in spintronic applications.
