Strain Switching in van der Waals Heterostructures Triggered by a Spin-Crossover Metal-Organic Framework

Carla Boix-Constant et al.

Summary: Van der Waals heterostructures offer the possibility of engineering new materials with unique functionalities by assembling different materials in layered structures. In this study, a molecular building block capable of producing strain, known as spin-crossover, is introduced to expand the family of van der Waals heterostructures. The electronic and optical properties of 2D materials can be switched by the strain accompanying the spin transition in smart van der Waals heterostructures. These molecular/inorganic heterostructures have significant applications in the fields of straintronics and band engineering in low-dimensional materials.

Charge and Spin Dynamics and Enantioselectivity in Chiral Molecules

J. Fransson

Summary: This study investigates the charge and spin dynamics in chiral molecules after their immediate coupling to an external metallic reservoir. The research describes the induction of spin polarization in chiral structures as a response to charge dynamics. The dynamics show that chirality-induced spin selectivity is an excited state phenomenon that can be partially explained using a simplistic single-particle description in the transient regime, but in the stationary limit, electron correlations, such as electron-vibration interactions, are crucial in sustaining an intrinsic spin anisotropy that leads to a nonvanishing spin selectivity. Furthermore, the dynamics provide insight into enantiomer separation based on different acquired spin polarizations.

Summary: This review focuses on the study of chiral degrees of freedom in matter and electromagnetic fields, discussing the recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect and the nanophotonic strategies designed to amplify chiral light-matter interactions. The CISS effect offers opportunities for spin control and the design of room-temperature quantum devices, while chiral-optical effects could have advantages in all-optical and quantum information technologies. The review presents a vision for the future roles of chiral-influenced quantum effects in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

Electrical Sensing of the Thermal and Light-Induced Spin Transition in Robust Contactless Spin-Crossover/Graphene Hybrid Devices

Miguel Gavara-Edo et al.

Summary: Hybrid devices based on spin-crossover/2D heterostructures provide a sensitive platform to detect spin transitions and tune the properties of 2D materials. However, the fragility of spin-crossover materials and the limitations of processing methods have restricted their applicability. This study presents an easily processable and robust hybrid device, where sublimable spin-crossover [Fe(Pyrz)(2)] molecules are deposited on chemical vapor deposition graphene. By growing an elusive polymorph of [Fe(Pyrz)(2)] on graphene, a fast and effective light-induced spin transition in the devices can be electrically detected.

Summary: In this study, the critical temperature of large-area NbSe2 monolayers was manipulated using ultrathin molecular adlayers. The aligned molecular dipoles within the self-assembled layers acted as a fixed gate terminal, generating a macroscopic electrostatic field on NbSe2. This manipulation resulted in significant changes in T-C, with the potential to improve air stability of NbSe2.

Quantum coherent spin-electric control in a molecular nanomagnet at clock transitions

Junjie Liu et al.

Summary: Electric control of spins at the nanoscale offers advantages in spintronics by confining electric fields over shorter lengths than magnetic fields. By identifying an energy scale in the spin spectrum associated with a structure with substantial electrical polarizability, stronger spin-electric couplings can be designed. This study demonstrates coherent electrical control of quantum spin state, paving the way for using molecular spins in quantum technologies and spintronics.

Origin of Chirality Induced Spin Selectivity in Photoinduced Electron Transfer

Thomas P. Fay et al.

Summary: A mechanism is proposed to generate spin-polarization dynamically in chiral molecular systems during photoinduced electron transfer. This mechanism explains how spin-polarization emerges in systems with incoherent hopping for charge transport, mediated by spin-orbit and electronic exchange couplings. The theory predicts nonmonotonic temperature dependence of spin-polarization, independent of spin-orbit coupling magnitude.

This study establishes a unified roadmap for rational development of these materials with increased thermoelectric response based on ab initio calculations and comprehensive examination of correlations. The results demonstrate that tailoring energy levels of molecular orbitals and understanding charge-transfer-caused Coulomb scattering are key factors in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of these complexes.
