The Impact of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents and Extraction Method on the Co-Extraction of Trace Metals from Fucus vesiculosus

Alexander N. Shikov et al.

Summary: Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been extensively studied for the extraction of food, medicinal plants, and seaweeds, but their ability for co-extraction of trace elements from natural sources remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the capability of common NADES for co-extraction of trace elements from Fucus vesiculosus. The results showed that all tested NADES did not recover arsenic and cobalt.

The Biochemical Composition and Antioxidant Properties of Fucus vesiculosus from the Arctic Region

Ekaterina D. Obluchinskaya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biochemical composition and antioxidant properties of Fucus vesiculosus from the Arctic region. The results showed variations in monosaccharide, phlorotannin, and flavonoid accumulation in relation to water salinity. Antioxidant activity was negatively correlated with the amount of fucoidan monosaccharides. The Metal Pollution Index showed medium correlation with reproductive phases, but strong correlation with salinity and sampling site. Based on the data, Fucus vesiculosus from the Arctic can be safely used for food and drug development.

In Vitro Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Fucoidans from Five Species of Brown Seaweeds

Ekaterina D. Obluchinskaya et al.

Summary: This study compared the anti-inflammatory effects of fucoidans from different brown seaweeds and determined their relationship with composition. The results showed that fucoidans exhibited radical scavenging, antioxidant, inhibition of protein denaturation, and cell membrane stabilization effects. Fucoidans could be a promising agent for the treatment of inflammatory-related diseases.

Chemical contaminant levels in edible seaweeds of the Salish Sea and implications for their consumption

Jennifer L. Hahn et al.

Summary: This study measured the levels of chemical contaminants in edible seaweeds from 43 locations in the Salish Sea and compared them to health-based screening levels and international limits. The results showed that six contaminants, including PCBs, BaP, Cd, total Hg, Pb, and total As, exceeded the standards or limits. However, due to the diversity of contaminants and the ways seaweeds are consumed, further research is needed to understand the impact on consumers.

Toxicological effects of marine seaweeds: a cautious insight for human consumption

Maushmi S. Kumar et al.

Summary: The marine environment is a rich source of biologically active substances, including functional foods and nutraceuticals. Seaweeds are a major contributor to food security and healthy nutrition globally, however, there is a lack of attention towards their toxicity reports. It is necessary to address the hazardous and toxic aspects of seaweeds due to their global consumption and increasing demands.

Metal concentrations in three species of Fucus L. on the Murmansk coast of the Barents Sea

Ekaterina Obluchinskaya et al.

Summary: This research conducted biomonitoring of anthropogenic changes in the fragile Arctic ecosystems by observing several coastal areas in the Barents Sea over a period from 2010 to 2018. The study found that metal concentrations in brown algae at most stations were significantly higher than background levels, with the most polluted waters showing concentrations several times higher. The study also revealed that metal concentrations in algae correlated well with that in water, and provided valuable data for the Murman Coast of the Barents Sea.

Efficacy of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents for Extraction of Hydrophilic and Lipophilic Compounds from Fucus vesiculosus

Ekaterina D. Obluchinskaya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of NADES composition and extraction conditions on the simultaneous extraction of antioxidants from Fucus vesiculosus, showing that NADES extracts have the potential to scavenge free radicals, with phlorotannins significantly influencing the scavenging activity. The addition of water and prolongation of sonication time during extraction were found to enhance the synergistic effect of antioxidants extracted by NADES.
