Photoinduced self-stability mechanism of CdS photocatalyst: The dependence of photocorrosion and H 2-evolution performance

Yuxiao Chen et al.

Summary: CdS photocorrosion plays a crucial role in the microstructural changes and photocatalytic H2 production of CdS catalysts. The presence of isolated metallic Cd nanoparticles on the CdS surface in the Na2S-Na2SO3 system leads to severe surface damage and decreased photocatalytic activity, while a homogeneously coated metallic Cd layer in the lactic acid system enhances the H2 evolution rate. The formation of CdS-Cd composites with a certain amount of metallic Cd on the CdS surface contributes to stable photocatalytic H2 production and excellent stability.

Selective liquid chemicals on CO2 reduction by energy level tuned rGO/ TiO2 dark cathode with BiVO4 photoanode

Myung Jong Kang et al.

Summary: Reduced graphene oxide layered TiO2 was utilized as a dark cathode for CO2 reduction reaction, with BiVO4 photoanode. The selectivity of liquid fuel production was achieved by adjusting the reduction degree of the rGO layer on TiO2 electrode, controlling the free energy level of electrons involved in CO2RR. The mechanism and pathway of liquid product selectivity were suggested based on isotope labelling and in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy studies.

TiO2 Facet-dependent reconstruction and photocatalysis of CuOx/TiO2 photocatalysts in CO2 photoreduction

Fei Fang et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of CuOx-TiO2 interaction on CO2 photocatalysis, with CuOx/TiO2-{001} showing the strongest interaction favoring the reduction of CO2 to CH4. Different TiO2 crystal facets exhibit varying abilities in supporting CuO species and influencing the photocatalytic reaction pathway. The results deepen the fundamental understanding of Cu-based photocatalysts and highlight the facet effect of TiO2 nanocrystals in TiO2-related photocatalysis.

Improved photocurrent response, photostability and photocatalytic hydrogen generation ability of CdS nanoparticles in presence of mesoporous carbon

Rumeli Banerjee et al.

Summary: Introduction of mesoporous carbon in nanocomposites with CdS nanoparticles improves photostability, minimizes photocorrosion, and prevents recombination of photogenerated electron and hole. Increasing carbon percentage enhances stability and photocurrent response of materials, with highly active porous carbon allowing cascading flow of excitons from CdS to restrain recombination process and boost electron flow for increased photosensitivity and photostability. Rate of photocatalytic H-2 production from water in presence of methanol as hole scavenger is significantly higher in nanocomposite compared to pure CdS and carbon.

Graphene coupled TiO2 photocatalysts for environmental applications: A review

Nisha T. Padmanabhan et al.

Summary: Nanostructured photocatalysts, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) composites with graphene, hold promise for addressing environmental challenges by providing a clean and sustainable ecosystem to humanity. The coupling of TiO2 with graphene has shown to be more active in photocatalysis, with graphene sheets facilitating the transfer and separation of photo-generated electrons during TiO2 excitation, ultimately reducing electron-hole recombination. Various design strategies and synthetic routes have been highlighted to enhance the interfacial charge transfer dynamics in TiO2/graphene nanocomposites for environmental remediation applications.

CdS nanoflakes decorated by Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Siqi Qiu et al.

Summary: The combination of P-type Ni(OH)(2) with n-type CdS nanorods and nanocrystals has enhanced the photocatalytic property due to the p-n junction. By controlling the reaction between Ni2+ and OH- through changing the irradiation time of CdS, efficient photocatalytic H-2 generation was achieved with Ni(OH)(2) nanoparticles deposited on CdS ultrathin nanoflakes. The enhancement in carrier separation and transfer, as well as band gap narrowing, led to an optimum H-2 generation of 20.14 mmol/g/h, nearly three times of pure CdS.

Band gap narrowing and prolongation of carrier lifetime in solution-processed CeO2/CdS thin films for application as photoanodes in quantum dot sensitized solar cells

Biswajyoti Mohanty et al.

Summary: The band gap energy of CeO2 nanostructures limits their efficiency in visible light harvesting, but forming a heterojunction with narrow band gap semiconductors such as CdS can reduce the optical band gap and effectively separate photogenerated charge carriers. CeO2/CdS nanocomposite thin films were successfully deposited on FTO glass substrates, showing improved carrier lifetime, reduced non-radiative recombination, and enhanced electrical conductivity. These improvements in CeO2/CdS films may lead to enhanced charge transportation ability, making them suitable for photovoltaic applications as demonstrated by significant values of J(sc) and V-oc obtained from photoelectrochemical solar cell measurements.
