Morphology and size effect of Pd nanocrystals on formaldehyde and hydrogen sensing performance of SnO2 based gas sensor

Gaojie Li et al.

Summary: The morphology and size effect of Pd nanocrystals on the gas sensing performance of SnO2 were investigated. The Pd-SnO2 composites with different sizes and morphologies showed selectivity to H-2 and HCHO. The size effect was found to be more significant than the morphology effect, and the 2%PdNP-SnO2 composite exhibited the best sensing performance among all the composites with different sizes. The Pd-NC1-SnO2 and Pd-OC-SnO2 composites showed better sensing performance to HCHO and H-2, respectively, among the composites with similar sizes but different shapes.

In Situ TEM Technique Revealing the Deactivation Mechanism of Bimetallic Pd-Ag Nanoparticles in Hydrogen Sensors

Xueqing Wang et al.

Summary: Bimetallic Pd-Ag alloy nanoparticles have been found to enhance the performance of H-2 sensors. However, the long-term stability of the sensors with Pd-Ag nanoparticles as catalysts decreases significantly during operation. In this study, gas-cell in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate the failure mechanisms of Pd-Ag nanoparticles under operation conditions. Based on the results, two failure mechanisms were identified, and the H-2 sensor was comprehensively optimized to improve stability. The optimized sensor exhibited satisfactory H-2-sensing properties and negligible response decline after 1 month.

In-situ investigation on hydrogenation-dehydrogenation of Pd-Ag alloy films

Amit Kumar Chawla et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis of Pd-Ag nano-composite films by magnetron cosputtering and the structural changes in the alloy film during hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to reveal subtle structural changes occurring, showing that adding Ag to Pd can completely remove dissolved hydrogen. Lower concentrations of Ag in Pd exhibit better performance during hydrogenation/dehydrogenation processes.

Rapid detection of low concentration H2 using Au@Pd/SnO2 nanocomposites

Xiaoning Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, Au@Pd/SnO2 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized and used for H2 sensing for the first time. The results showed that Au@Pd/SnO2 exhibited superior H2 sensitivity compared to Pd/SnO2, and Au@Pd-2/SnO2 showed excellent sensing properties with a response of 16.75 towards 100 ppm H2 at 100 C and a response/recovery time of 1/5 s. The enhanced sensing characteristics can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the Au@Pd bimetallic catalyst.
