Alloys for application at ultra-high temperatures: Nb-silicide in situ composites Challenges, breakthroughs and opportunities

P. Tsakiropoulos

Summary: This paper compares Nb-silicide based alloys with refractory-complex-concentrated-alloys (RCCAs) in terms of density, oxidation, and mechanical properties, highlighting the importance of alloying to suppress oxidation and scale spallation, and to meet fracture toughness goals. The discussion also emphasizes the role of microstructure type, Ti/Si, Ti/Hf, Nb/(Ti + Hf) ratios, and alloying additions in creep behavior, and describes the alloying behavior using parameters such as delta, Delta chi, VEC, Delta Hmix, Delta Smix, and omega. The study shows that RCCAs with Nb and other RM additions can be represented together with Nb-silicide based alloys in the same maps of the aforementioned parameters, indicating similarities in their alloying behavior.

High deformation ability induced by phase transformation through adjusting Cr content in Co-Fe-Ni-Cr high entropy alloys

Xuefeng Gao et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant changes in phase transformation and mechanical properties of high entropy alloys as the chromium content increases. With the increase of chromium content, the volume fractions of HCP and sigma phases increase, leading to an increase in yield strength, but the increase in sigma phase reduces the ductility of the material.

Oxidation behavior of the Ti38V15Nb23Hf24 refractory high-entropy alloy at elevated temperatures

Ouyang Di et al.

Summary: The oxidation behavior of Ti38V15Nb23Hf24 refractory high-entropy alloy in air was studied. Two types of oxidation behavior were observed. Below 1000?, a dense composite oxide scale formed on the surface, while above 1000?, internal oxidation occurred in the alloy matrix.

Superior High-Temperature Strength in a Supersaturated Refractory High-Entropy Alloy

Rui Feng et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys show promising applications at high temperatures and a single-phase alloy with high-temperature strength can be designed based on intrinsic material characteristics. The high-temperature strength retention is attributed to mechanisms such as large atomic-size and elastic-modulus mismatches, insensitive temperature dependence of elastic constants, and dominance of non-screw character dislocations caused by strong solute pinning.

The Effect of Al on the Formation of a CrTaO4 Layer in Refractory High Entropy Alloys Ta-Mo-Cr-Ti-xAl

S. Schellert et al.

Summary: The study found that the high temperature oxidation of Al-containing refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) is significantly influenced by the Al content. Lower Al concentrations are affected by the formation of other oxidation products, while higher Al concentrations result in relatively thin oxide scales and internal corrosion zones. Low Al concentrations lead to thick and porous oxide scales.
