Microstructural evolution and properties of a Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr-O prepared by high-pressure torsion

Murillo Romero da Silva et al.

Summary: In this study, the Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr-0.070 (TNTZO) alloy was processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) and its microstructure, phase stability, elastic behavior, mechanical properties, and deformation mechanisms were investigated. An increase in beta-phase stability, significant hardening, and a new reverse martensitic transformation mechanism were observed after severe plastic deformation. The greater hardness was attributed to microstructural refinement, high dislocation density, and stress-induced formation of the omega-phase.

Low-Temperature Mechanical Instabilities Govern High-Temperature Thermodynamics in the Austenite Phase of Shape Memory Alloy Constituents: Ab Initio Simulations of NiTi, NiZr, NiHf, PdTi, and PtTi

Justin B. Haskins et al.

Summary: Recent studies using ab initio molecular dynamics have investigated the accuracy of phase diagrams and the stability of structures in common NiTi-based shape memory alloys. It was found that experimentally determined martensite structures are stabilized by anharmonic effects at elevated temperatures, transitioning to a common austenite structure. The low-temperature B2' structure governs anharmonicity and high-temperature transitions to B2, with energy differences linearly correlated to the transitions.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of substituting varying amounts of vanadium for titanium in TiPt shape memory alloy on microstructure, crystal structure, and phase transformation. The results demonstrated that the addition of vanadium improved the functional properties and increased the martensitic transformation temperature of TiPt.
