Effective sensitization of Eu3+ visible red emission by Sm3+ in thermally stable potassium zinc alumino borosilicate glasses for photonic device applications

A. S. Rao

Summary: Thermally stable potassium zinc alumino borosilicate glasses doped with Sm3+/Eu3+ were prepared using the melt quenching method and characterized using spectroscopic techniques. The addition of Sm3+ ions as a sensitizer improved the efficiency of the glasses for display devices, and non-radiative energy transfer from Sm3+ to Eu3+ ions was observed. The calculated CIE points of the glasses shifted towards the red region under UV excitation. These results suggest that the as prepared glasses are suitable for photonic device applications.
