Evolutions of superelasticity and elastocaloric effect of Ti50Ni48Fe2 and aged-hardened Ni-rich Ti49.2Ni49.3Fe1.5 shape memory alloys under cyclic compressive deformation

Hao-Chen Lee et al.

Summary: The investigation showed that Ti49.2Ni49.3Fe1.5 alloy aged at 400 degrees C for 150 h exhibited the largest recoverable strain in superelasticity and retained the largest cooling effect after 1000 deformation cycles. The linear superelasticity exhibited a low slope of the Clausius-Clapeyron relation of about 0.5 MPa/degrees C, allowing the alloys to exhibit super-elasticity and the elastocaloric effect over a wider temperature range.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of multi-pass forged and annealed 42CrMo steel

Wanhui Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of multi-pass forging and annealing treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 42CrMo steel were investigated in this work. The results show that multi-pass forging can refine the grain size and increase dislocation density, leading to higher yield stress. Annealing at different temperatures after forging can reduce the yield stress and improve elongation, with corresponding brittle-ductile transition in fracture features.

Toward tunable mechanical behavior and enhanced elastocaloric effect in NiTi alloy by gradient structure

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel strategy to achieve highly tunable mechanical behavior and significantly enhanced elastocaloric effect in superelastic NiTi through the fabrication of a gradient structure using laser surface annealing. The gradient-structured NiTi exhibits tailorable martensitic transformation characteristics and shows improved elastocaloric cooling capacity and efficiency compared to traditional nanocrystalline and coarse-grained NiTi. The strong synergetic strengthening between fine and coarse grains in the gradient-structured NiTi contributes to these significant performance breakthroughs.

Learning from superelasticity data to search for Ti-Ni alloys with large elastocaloric effect

Lei Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the reversible adiabatic temperature change of shape memory alloys is proportional to the mechanical work released during unloading, allowing for the prediction of temperature change without caloric measurements. By tuning composition and thermo-mechanical treatment, Ti-Ni binary shape memory alloys with large temperature changes were achieved, attributed to grain refinement and internal stress fields.
