Achieving maximum strength-ductility combination in fine-grained Cu-Zn alloy via detwinning and twinning deformation mechanisms

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: The optimum grain size for achieving the maximum strength-ductility combination in low SFE alloy has been explored. The annihilation of annealing twins and the transformation of twin boundaries into high-angle grain boundaries contribute to the improvement in ductility. The occurrence of deformation twinning in grains with specific orientation further enhances the synergy between strength and ductility.

Strengthening CrFeCoNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high entropy alloy via laser shock peening

Wujing Fu et al.

Summary: The present work demonstrates that laser shock peening (LSP) can significantly improve the mechanical properties of CrFeCoNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high entropy alloy (HEA). LSP-treated HEA samples achieve a yield strength more than two times that of as-cast alloys, attributed to the introduction of a gradient microstructure comprising subgrains, dense dislocations, and nano-twins near the treated surface. The combination of dislocation hardening and mechanical twinning leads to excellent plasticity during tensile loading. The results also indicate the possibility of developing gradient-structured HEAs with excellent mechanical properties using LSP.

An investigation on the corrosion performance of Fe2CoCrNi0.5 based high entropy alloys

Yigit Garip

Summary: The electrochemical and hot corrosion behaviors of Fe2CoCrNi0.5 based HEAs were studied and it was found that Si addition improved the corrosion resistance. Fe2CoCrNi0.5Si0.25Cu0.25 alloy exhibited the best electrochemical corrosion resistance, while Fe2CoCrNi0.5Cu0.25 alloy showed the worst resistance to hot corrosion.

Tailoring oxidation resistance of Fe2CoCrNi0.5 based high entropy alloys by addition of alloying elements (Si, Cu and Si-Cu co-added)

Yigit Garip

Summary: This study investigates the effects of alloying elements on the microstructure and oxidation performance of high entropy alloys. It was found that the addition of Si improves the oxidation resistance, while Cu addition increases the thickness of the oxide scale. The alloying elements do not have a favorable effect on relieving internal oxidation.

Tailoring oxidation resistance of Fe2CoCrNi0.5 based high entropy alloys by addition of alloying elements (Si, Cu and Si-Cu co-added)

Yigit Garip

Summary: This study investigated the effects of alloying elements on the microstructure and oxidation performance of high entropy alloys, revealing that Si addition can enhance oxidation resistance, while Cu addition leads to thickening of the oxide scale and increased mass change. Si addition increases the amount of Ni-rich oxide in the oxide scale, and Cu addition results in a specific structure of the oxide scale in Cu-added and Si-Cu co-added HEAs.

Summary: In this study, the cyclic oxidation and electrochemical corrosion behaviors of CoCrFeNiAlx high entropy alloys produced by resistance sintering were investigated. The results showed that increasing the Al content can enhance the cyclic oxidation resistance of the HEAs but also decrease their corrosion resistance in acid and saltwater environments.

Effect of annealing temperatures on microstructure and deformation behavior of Al0.1CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

S. W. Wu et al.

Summary: The study explored the microstructure and deformation behavior of the Al0.1CrFeCoNi high-entropy alloy at different annealing temperatures, revealing that the 873 K-annealed specimens exhibited a good combination of strength and ductility. The relationship between yield strength and average grain sizes followed the Hall-Petch equation with a high Hall-Petch coefficient. Nanotwinning was found to be the cause of specific regimes in the strain-hardening rate versus true strain curves for different annealed samples.

Cryoforged nanotwinned titanium with ultrahigh strength and ductility

Shiteng Zhao et al.

Summary: Nanostructured metals are usually strong due to high internal boundary density, limiting dislocation mean free path, but also more brittle. Nanotwinned materials can overcome this trade-off. A new nanostructuring method enhances the strength and ductility of titanium.

Evading strength-corrosion tradeoff in Mg alloys via dense ultrafine twins

Changjian Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ultrafine grained Mg alloys with dense twins exhibit high strength and reduced corrosion rate compared to conventional ultrafine grains, achieved through a carefully designed multi-directional compression treatment refining grain size down to 300nm. This technique not only decreases micro-galvanic corrosion tendency, but also completely suppresses severe localized corrosion.
