Damage indicators for early fatigue damage assessment in WC-Co hardmetals under uniaxial cyclic loads at a stress ratio of R =-1 at elevated temperatures

Kathrin Maier et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the fatigue failure mechanisms of WC-Co hardmetals under high-temperature cyclic loading conditions, finding that failure occurred earlier at 800 degrees Celsius than at 700 degrees Celsius. It was observed that the stress-strain hysteresis loop parameters were related to the damage evolution state at the microstructure level and the deformation behavior of WC and Co phases with increasing number of load cycles.

Micropillar compression of single crystal tungsten carbide, Part 1: Temperature and orientation dependence of deformation behaviour

Helen Jones et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical behavior of the isolated tungsten carbide phase was investigated using single crystal micropillar compression, revealing significant anisotropic plastic deformation mechanisms. Basal-oriented pillars exhibited flow stresses about three times higher than prismatic pillars, and both orientations softened slightly with increasing temperature. The dominant slip plane in deformed pillars was found to be {1010} prismatic planes, with basal slip also activated as a secondary slip system at high temperatures.

Summary: This study aimed to experimentally determine limit stresses leading to advancing ratcheting in different grades of WC-Co hardmetals at elevated temperatures. The plastic strain per cycle decreases below the limit stress, with accumulation stopping after a number of cycles. Microstructural influence on ratcheting onset and damage development was investigated.

Residual stress evolution enhanced martensite phase transition and texture development in cryogenic-tempered WC-Co ultra-coarse grained cemented carbide

Tao Hua et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of residual stress on the microstructure, martensite phase transition, texture development, and mechanical properties enhancement in cryogenic tempered WC-6wt.%Co ultra-coarse grained cemented carbides. The results showed that the residual stress increase and temperature decrease both affect the martensite phase transition, and the occurrence of martensite phase transition during tempering is highly related to the residual stress evolution. The preferred orientation of WC phase is concentrated due to the evolution of residual stress, which leads to an increase in hardness and transverse rupture strength.

Tungsten carbide molds for precision glass molding process: Mechanism of high-temperature degradation

Shengdi Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface failure mechanism of WC substrate during precision glass molding was investigated. It was found that the oxidation of WC substrate at elevated temperatures is the main cause of degradation, leading to reduced material strength, increased wear, glass sticking, and surface roughness. However, it was also demonstrated that the WC mold without protective coatings can still be used in suitable molding environments for fabricating glass optics.

Evaluation of tool wear mechanisms and tool performance in machining single-phase tungsten

Mike Olsson et al.

Summary: Tungsten is commonly used in various industries, including nuclear and research facilities, due to its unique properties. However, its poor machinability and brittleness present challenges for tooling solutions. In this study, various tool materials were tested for turning high purity tungsten, with only PCD and PVD coated cemented carbide showing sufficient performance. Wear mechanisms were analyzed, revealing abrasion, oxidation, and cracking for carbide tools, while PCD tools showed mainly abrasion and diffusional dissolution. Surface quality issues were attributed to factors such as cracking, porosity, and adhesion.

Summary: WC-Co cemented carbides are widely used in metal machining and wear resistant tools due to their excellent hardness and toughness. Controlling the WC grain size is crucial for the mechanical properties of the material. Experimental and theoretical studies suggest the stabilization of thin cubic WC films at liquid phase sintering temperatures under W-rich conditions, providing an explanation for the observed differences in growth rates and grain morphologies in W-rich and C-rich cemented carbides.
