Occurrence of selected per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in food available on the European market - A review on levels and human exposure assessment

Elina Pasecnaja et al.

Summary: PFASs are considered emerging persistent organic pollutants that enter the human body mainly through dietary intake, accumulate in tissues, and may cause health problems. Fruits and vegetables have become a more significant source of PFASs than meat, according to recent studies. The European Food Safety Authority has set tolerable weekly intake levels for certain PFASs.

Summary: The elimination half-lives of PFAS in cattle serum were not affected by initial concentration, gender, or age. While there were differences in elimination rates of certain PFAS in serum and tissues, the overall trends were similar.

Analysis of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in processed foods from FDA's Total Diet Study

Summary: Additional occurrence data are needed to better understand human exposure to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from commercially available foods in the United States. Positive detections of PFOS, PFNA, PFDA were found in frozen fish sticks/patties, canned tuna, and protein powder, respectively, with concentrations below 150 ppt.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in livestock and game species: A review

Clare Death et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals with resistance to environmental breakdown, leading to concerns for human, animal, and environmental health. The main source of human exposure to PFAS is through dietary intake, but understanding of exposure in terrestrial animals is limited. More research is needed to define PFAS concentrations in livestock and game species. Livestock and game animals may be exposed to PFAS through various sources, and the contribution of these exposures to PFAS concentrations in food products is not well studied. Further studies on toxicokinetics and health effects in animals are necessary to address the potential risks associated with PFAS exposure.

Method Development and Validation of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Foods from FDA's Total Diet Study Program

Susan Genualdi et al.

Summary: The human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through the US diet has not been well characterized, leading to the development and validation of a method for PFAS detection in various foods. The study found that utilizing the QuEChERS method for PFAS extraction and analyzing via liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry is effective, with a custom push-through SPE cartridge showing promising results as a rapid cleanup option for food samples. Challenges in ion confirmation were discussed, with the use of enhanced product ion (EPI) full-scan MS/MS spectra presented as a potential option for verifying false positives.

A Statistical Approach for Identifying Private Wells Susceptible to Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Contamination

Xindi C. Hu et al.

Summary: This study examines modeling approaches for predicting PFAS concentrations in private wells, finding that a classification random forest model based on nationally available predictors is the most effective and can be readily extended to other regions. Point sources from industries and secondary predictors like groundwater recharge, precipitation, soil sand content, and hydraulic conductivity contributed to accuracy in the models.

Accumulation of PFAS by livestock - determination of transfer factors from water to serum for cattle and sheep in Australia

Roger Drew et al.

Summary: This study investigates the accumulation of PFAS in adult beef cattle and sheep raised on a hobby farm impacted by PFAS contamination, finding that the concentrations in serum stabilize after ingesting contaminated water. Transfer factors for cattle ranged from 140 to 170, while for ewes the range was 20 to 30. These findings can assist in conducting human health risk assessments.
