Functionalized chitosan nanoparticles for cutaneous delivery of a skin whitening agent: an approach to clinically augment the therapeutic efficacy for melasma treatment

Shymaa Hatem et al.

Summary: This study developed functionalized chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) in gel form for enhanced topical delivery of alpha-arbutin to treat melasma. The CSNPs demonstrated positive zeta potential, high entrapment efficiency, good stability, and sustained release of alpha-arbutin. In vitro and clinical evaluations showed that the CSNPs hydrogel had better therapeutic efficacy compared to the free drug hydrogel, making it a promising modality for melasma treatment.

Recent Progress on Feasible Strategies for Arbutin Production

Ke-Xin Xu et al.

Summary: Arbutin is a natural product with potent melanin inhibiting properties, which has been widely used in whitening cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. However, its current production heavily relies on chemical synthesis, which can compromise product purity. This review critically evaluates current strategies for arbutin production and discusses the potential of biobased production methods.

Chitosan-coated magnetic nanoparticles used as substrate immobilization carrier for α-arbutin biosynthesis process

Jiaming He et al.

Summary: Chitosan-coated magnetic nanoparticles were used as a carrier for glucosyl acceptor in alpha-arbutin production, with Fe3O4@CTS microspheres being prepared and modified with chitosan to immobilize substrate hydroquinone. The maximum immobilization amount of HQ on Fe3O4@CTS was found to be 312 mg/g Fe3O4@CTS, and the optimal reaction conditions led to a final yield of alpha-arbutin reaching 7.85 g/L after shaking Fe3O4@CTS@HQ in fermentation broth. This study provides valuable insights for the industrial-scale production of alpha-arbutin.
