Effect of long acting injectable antipsychotics on course and hospitalizations in bipolar disorder - a naturalistic mirror image study

Eren Yildizhan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-AP) on the prognosis of bipolar disorder. The results showed that LAI-AP treatment may have a positive effect on selected patients with a long history of bipolar disorder, reducing hospitalization and residual symptoms. During the recovery period with LAI antipsychotics, patients exhibited mild residual symptoms.

Comparing 1-year effectiveness and acceptability of once-monthly paliperidone palmitate and aripiprazole monohydrate for schizophrenia spectrum disorders: Findings from the STAR Network Depot Study

Francesco Bartoli et al.

Summary: This prospective study assessed the effectiveness and acceptability of paliperidone palmitate 1-month (PP1M) and aripiprazole monohydrate (AM) over a 1-year follow-up period in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. While some evidence suggests superiority of AM over PP1M, the findings of this study showed comparable effectiveness between the two drugs. Further studies with direct comparisons in real-world settings are needed.

Time to rehospitalization in patients with bipolar mania discharged on long-acting injectable or oral antipsychotics

Ching-Hua Lin et al.

Summary: The study showed that discharged patients with bipolar mania had a significantly lower rehospitalization risk when using long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) compared to oral antipsychotics. The prescription rate of LAIs increased significantly during the study period, especially for second-generation antipsychotics (SGA-LAIs).

Recurrence rates in stable bipolar disorder patients after drug discontinuation v. drug maintenance: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Taro Kishi et al.

Summary: Maintaining drug treatment can prevent recurrence in patients with bipolar disorder for up to 24 months, while discontinuation of medications for more than one month significantly increases the risk of recurrence. However, 47.3% of patients who discontinued drugs for 6 months did not experience recurrence.

Maintenance Treatment With Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics for People With Nonaffective Psychoses: A Network Meta-Analysis

Giovanni Ostuzzi et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and acceptability of long-acting injectable antipsychotics in adults with nonaffective psychoses, finding that paliperidone (3-month formulation), aripiprazole, olanzapine, and paliperidone (1-month formulation) showed the highest effect sizes and certainty of evidence for relapse prevention and acceptability.

Comparing Long-Acting Antipsychotic Discontinuation Rates Under Ordinary Clinical Circumstances: A Survival Analysis from an Observational, Pragmatic Study

Federico Bertolini et al.

Summary: This study found that LAI discontinuation rates are high in real-world clinical settings, with olanzapine LAI being the most discontinued. The main reasons for discontinuation are adverse events and patient refusal, and baseline medication adherence was negatively associated with discontinuation risk.

Effectiveness of 2-year treatment with aripiprazole long-acting injectable and comparison with paliperidone palmitate

Katy Mason et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the real-world effectiveness of ALAI and PP1M in patients with severe mental illness, finding that ALAI had a substantial impact on reducing hospital admissions and length of stay. There were no significant differences in hospitalization rates between patients on ALAI and PP1M at 2 years.
