Increased ciliary neurotrophic factor in blood serum and lacrimal fluid as a potential biomarkers of focal epilepsy

Alexander Shpak et al.

Summary: The study evaluated CNTF levels in blood serum and lacrimal fluid of people with epilepsy, finding higher CNTF levels in epilepsy patients compared to healthy volunteers, but without significant correlation between the two. Factors such as comorbid depression, clinical parameters, and biomarker levels did not impact CNTF levels in epilepsy patients.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in blood serum and lacrimal fluid of patients with focal epilepsy

Alexander A. Shpak et al.

Summary: In a case-control study of patients with epilepsy and healthy volunteers, it was found that BDNF levels were decreased in both blood serum and lacrimal fluid of epilepsy patients, without significant correlation between the two. Men had higher BDNF levels in lacrimal fluid compared to women in the control group, and a similar trend was observed in epilepsy patients. Additionally, epilepsy patients receiving valproates showed higher BDNF levels in blood serum.

Serum levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor as a biomarker for mood disorders and lithium response

Keita Idemoto et al.

Summary: The study revealed that serum levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) were significantly decreased in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to healthy controls, and remained lower in patients in remission or depressive states after treatment. Furthermore, lower serum GDNF levels were associated with a higher clinical severity and better response to lithium therapy in BD patients.

Glaucoma as Neurodegeneration in the Brain

Jane W. Chan et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by optic nerve degeneration, which shares common neurodegenerative pathways with Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. Genetic associations, such as the Apolipoprotein E gene, have been found in both primary open angle glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease, suggesting potential overlap in pathogenic mechanisms. Neuronal pathways contributing to transsynaptic neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease and tauopathies may also play a role in glaucomatous neurodegeneration.
