Improving vacuum gas nitriding of a Ti-based alloy via surface solid phase transformation

X. J. Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel nitriding technology using laser quenching to achieve excellent nitriding effect on the surface of TiZrAl alloy, increasing the thickness and nitrogen content of the nitrided layer while operating at lower temperatures. This method has significant implications for surface nitriding and carburizing of titanium alloys and other alloy materials.

The Effect of Dissolved Nitrogen on the Fatigue Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V

C. R. Collins et al.

Summary: The study showed that nitrogen additions increase beta-transus temperature and strength, but decrease ductility, leading to reductions in both low cycle fatigue life and high cycle fatigue strength. Even small amounts of nitrogen can cause these effects, and neither microstructure nor fractographic examination is necessarily a reliable indicator of the presence of harmful nitrogen contamination.

High-cycle bending fatigue behavior of TC6 titanium alloy subjected to laser shock peening assisted by cryogenic temperature

Jing Li et al.

Summary: The coupling strengthening process of cryogenic laser shock peening (CLSP) proposed in this study effectively improved the high-cycle bending fatigue (HCBF) life of aeroengine blades by introducing higher-density of dislocation and deformation twins, increasing surface compressive residual stress, and enhancing damping ratio and fatigue life compared to room temperature laser shock peening (RT-LSP) method.

Summary: The study demonstrated that UNSM can improve the fatigue properties of A100 steel by inducing plastic deformation layer and refining martensite microstructure. Additionally, the enhanced surface compressive residual stress and increased surface hardness after UNSM treatment contribute significantly to the resistance against fatigue crack nucleation and propagation.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of model TiN coatings on Ti-6Al-4V substrates, comparing three interface engineering approaches. It was found that higher compressive residual stress led to enhanced interfacial shear strength and critical energy release rate.

Thermal Stability of the Deformed Surface Layer of VT22 Titanium Alloy in a Nitrogen-Containing Medium

I. M. Pohrelyuk et al.

Summary: The thermal stability of the deformed surface layer on VT22 titanium alloy was investigated in both vacuum and molecular nitrogen. Through microstructural, durometric, and X-ray diffraction analyses, it was confirmed that this layer remains stable up to 820 degrees C when saturated with nitrogen. Additionally, it was observed that recrystallization of the strain-hardened layer is suppressed during heating in nitrogen due to solid-solution hardening.
