A new estimation method and an anisotropy index for the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses

Bohu Zhang et al.

Summary: An analytical method is developed to determine the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses, considering the mechanical properties of intact rocks and joints. The method is applicable to different types of jointed rock masses. An anisotropy index is defined to quantitatively describe the anisotropy of rock masses. The proposed method is validated through numerical experiments.

Experimental study on permeability response in fractured rock to the effect of hydro-mechanical coupling, fracture geometry, and component content

Tong Zhang et al.

Summary: The experiment results demonstrate that the conductivity of fractured rock mass is influenced by hydraulic pressure, confining stress, and axial stress, as well as by fracture morphology and component content. Different types of fractured rock exhibit varying permeability characteristics in terms of pressure dependence and history memory effects.

CO2 injection strategies for enhanced oil recovery and geological sequestration in a tight reservoir: An experimental study

Danchen Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of different injection strategies for simultaneous CO2 EOR and storage in ultra-low permeability core samples. Water alternative gas injection was found to be more effective than continuous gas injection, while cyclic gas injection provided the most efficient strategy for enhanced oil recovery in the tight rocks studied.

A new approach for modeling three-dimensional fractured reservoirs with embedded complex fracture networks

Cristian Mejia et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new embedded fracture approach for fluid flow in highly fractured porous media, which includes condensation technique to merge fracture contributions into continuum elements and guarantee compatibility between fractures and porous matrix within a standard finite element mesh. Despite its simplicity, the method demonstrates robustness and applicability to highly fractured rock reservoir cells with random fracture orientation. The pore pressure field obtained with this approach closely matches predictions from explicit approaches with zero-thickness interface elements, showing promising results.

An integrated 3D fracture network reconstruction method based on microseismic events

Xing Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated 3D fracture reconstruction method utilizing RANSAC, DBSCAN, and the alpha-shape method, which shows high accuracy and anti-noise capability in handling synthetic events. The method has been successfully applied in a horizontal well stimulated by multi-stage fracturing in Sichuan Basin of China, providing a consistent fracture network model with field production.
