Unequal area facility layout problem-solving: a real case study on an air-conditioner production shop floor

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: Solving facility layout problems involves finding the optimal plan for arranging facilities or departments on a shop floor, considering multiple criteria and constraints. This study focuses on the unequal area facility layout problem (UA-FLP) in an air-conditioner production shop floor and proposes a modified non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) to identify the best layout plan based on material handling cost (MHC) and closeness rating score (CRS). The modified NSGA-II, which has an efficient encoding structure, addresses the conflicting objectives and reduces the time needed to eliminate unsuitable layout plans.

Bi-objective coordinated production and transportation scheduling problem with sustainability: formulation and solution approaches

Ece Yagmur et al.

Summary: This paper studies a new variant of integrated production scheduling and vehicle routing problem. The paper considers the production of customer orders in a job-shop environment and the deliveries made by a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles. The objective is to minimize both the CO2 emissions by vehicles and the maximum tardiness resulting from late deliveries. The paper formulates the problem as a bi-objective mixed-integer programming and proposes solutions using Augmented epsilon-Constraint (Augmecon) method, Pareto Local Search (PLS), and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The experimental results show the performance of each method for small, medium, and large-sized instances.

Meta-heuristics for sustainable supply chain management: a review

Sohrab Faramarzi-Oghani et al.

Summary: This article provides a literature review on the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), based on the analysis of 160 selected papers. The findings show a significant growth in research in this field in recent years, with hybrid meta-heuristics overtaking pure meta-heuristics. The genetic algorithm (GA) and the non-dominated sorting GA (NSGA-II) are the most commonly used single- and multi-objective algorithms. The study also highlights the importance of addressing sustainability aspects in product distribution and vehicle routing, as well as the growing attention to the economic-environmental category of sustainability.
