Circular economy supply network management: A complex adaptive system

Antonio Carlos Braz et al.

Summary: This study introduces an innovative framework characterizing circular economy supply network management as a complex adaptive system, which includes three different configurations: closed loop, open loop, and a hybrid loop supply network. The framework consists of three key elements - management mechanisms, internal and external environment, and emergent properties, as well as three sets of propositions relating each of these key elements to different circular economy supply network management configurations. Additionally, it introduces two types of leverage points - upstream and downstream - for coordinating post-consumption product flow.

Unlocking the circular ecosystem concept: Evolution, current research, and future directions

Adriana Hofmann Trevisan et al.

Summary: Circular ecosystem is a fast-growing phenomenon where autonomous yet interdependent actors work together to create and deliver circular value propositions to customers. Research shows that ensuring multiple cycles of value and balanced actors are critical aspects of a circular ecosystem. By introducing a framework, we can better understand and articulate the unique features of circular ecosystems.

Supply chain collaboration and sustainability performance in circular economy: A systematic literature review

Jayani Ishara Sudusinghe et al.

Summary: This article examines how collaboration can improve sustainability performance in implementing circularity in supply chains, through a systematic literature review and content analysis. The findings suggest that sharing information, penalties and incentives, risk-sharing, and joint product design are important external collaboration practices, while cross-functional coordination and collaboration with government agencies are crucial internal and external collaboration practices. The study also highlights the need to improve social performance in circular supply chains and emphasizes the importance of engaging external parties for managerial understanding and improvement.

The roles of performance measurement and management in the development and implementation of business ecosystem strategies

Pietro Micheli et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the roles of organizational PMM practices in the development and implementation of business ecosystem strategies. Through a longitudinal study at a Japanese multinational technology corporation, it was found that the process of developing and implementing the ecosystem strategy was emergent and highly iterative. PMM practices initially acted as barriers to ecosystem development by promoting excessive focus on revenue generation, but once modified, they helped capture, convey, and reassess the ecosystem strategy. Performance targets, indicators, and strategy maps were key means to express competing perspectives.

Dispersed knowledge management in ecosystems

Leonardo Augusto de Vasconcelos Gomes et al.

Summary: Accessing and sharing dispersed knowledge in ecosystems is challenging, and focal firms must purposely create conditions and take actions to manage dispersed knowledge effectively. This study investigated how firms manage dispersed knowledge in ecosystems characterized by autonomous, heterogeneous actors through qualitative case studies and interviews. The findings propose a new framework for dispersed knowledge orchestration and strategies for ecosystems, contributing to a multi-level approach in the field.
