Characterization of distribution of residual stress in shot-peened layer of nickel-based single crystal superalloy DD6 by nanoindentation technique

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: The hardness, elastic modulus, yield strength, work hardening exponent, and residual stress within the shot-peened layer of nickel-based single crystal superalloy DD6 were experimentally obtained by nanoindentation. Different models for calculating residual stresses showed similar trends with depth, but significant differences in values were found, with Wang's model being most suitable for DD6. The study also revealed that residual stress has an impact on mechanical properties such as hardness and yield strength, but has a minimal effect on elastic modulus.

Tingyun Ming et al.

Summary: Water jet cavitation peening (WJP) was used to improve the corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of 316L stainless steel in high temperature water. The results showed that WJP significantly enhanced the corrosion and SCC resistance of the material, which can be attributed to the increase in residual compressive stress and changes in the surface layer microstructure.

Effect of shot peening on static and fatigue properties of self-piercing riveting joints

Zhi-Chao Huang et al.

Summary: This study combines shot peening process with self-piercing riveting process to improve the performance of self-piercing riveting joints. Shot peening can induce residual compressive stress in aluminum sheets, resulting in improved static and fatigue strength of the joints. The main fatigue failure type is the damage of the lower sheets at the contact zones with the rivet leg. The shot peening process effectively enhances the self-piercing riveting joint performance.

Summary: Shot peening and cavitation peening are traditional methods used to improve the fatigue properties of metallic materials. Research has shown that shot peened specimens have longer fatigue life under certain conditions, while cavitation peened specimens have slightly higher fatigue strength. Both methods introduce compressive residual stress which decreases during fatigue testing.

Summary: With the increasing use of large and ultra-large pressure vessels in petrochemical and power generation industries, traditional local post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures are no longer feasible, prompting the introduction of a new primary-secondary heating based local PWHT technique (PS-PWHT). Both finite element residual stress modeling and experimental residual stress measurements have shown that the PS-PWHT method can significantly reduce welding-induced residual stresses, even leading to some level of compressive residual stresses at the vessel weld region.
