Effect of the Intermediate Principal Stress on Pre-peak Damage Propagation in Hard Rock Under True Triaxial Compression

Zhuorui Wu et al.

Summary: Understanding the damage propagation mechanisms in rock under true triaxial stress is crucial. This paper presents an enhanced version of the Discrete Equivalent Wing Crack Damage (DEWCD) model to predict damage in true triaxial compression tests. The model successfully captures the deformation and damage differences in different loading directions and accurately predicts the effects of intermediate principal stress on deformation and damage.

A cohesive viscoelastic-elastoplastic-damage model for DEM and its applications to predict the rate- and time-dependent behaviour of asphalt concretes

Dai Xuan Lu et al.

Summary: Asphalt concrete shows great dependence on loading rates and time in terms of its mechanical behavior, which poses a challenge for numerical methods. This study proposes a new modelling approach using the discrete element method (DEM) to capture the behavior of asphalt concrete under different loading rates and durations. A new inter-particle contact model is developed for the DEM, which can describe the rate and time dependency, viscoelastic damage, and plastic-damage behavior of asphalt concrete. The proposed approach demonstrates its effectiveness through comparisons and verifications with a wide range of experiments, and it can provide insights into the failure mechanisms and transitional behaviors of asphalt material.

Two-scale random field model for quasi-brittle materials

Jie Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a new concept of two-scale random field using quasi-brittle materials as an example, where the random fluctuation of material damage and the spatial correlation of mechanical properties are described by the random distribution of fracture strain. By introducing a transform matrix, the mesoscopic random fields can be described as a two-scale random field, and a two-step numerical implementation method is proposed. The mechanical behaviors of quasi-brittle materials can be analyzed by incorporating the probability density evolution theory, and an experimental example is presented to demonstrate the model's capability to reproduce random material properties at both scales.

Anisotropic energy-based progressive damage model for laminated geomaterials

Cunbao Li et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an energy-based damage model for characterizing both the inherent anisotropy and stress-induced anisotropy of laminated geomaterials. The fabric tensor is utilized to describe the inherent anisotropy, and the general stress-strain relationship and anisotropic stiffness matrix are derived. A fourth-order damage tensor is defined to reflect the anisotropy of damage, which is dependent on two scalar damage factors. Anisotropic damage evolution rules are proposed to distinguish the mechanical responses of laminated geomaterials under compression and tension, and the new constitutive model is shown to capture anisotropic mechanical deformation and damage evolution effectively.

Experimental Study on Rock Strength and Deformation Characteristics Under Triaxial Cyclic Loading and Unloading Conditions

Qing-bin Meng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the strength, deformation, and expansion characteristics of rock specimens under triaxial cyclic loading and unloading testing. With the increase of confining pressure sigma(3), the strength of rock specimens increased, while the elasticity modulus El showed an initial increase followed by a decrease. The generalized Poisson's ratio μ(l) and generalized internal friction angle φ ' showed different trends in response to the cycle index and confining pressure sigma(3).
