A multi-physics, multi-scale and finite strain crystal plasticity-based model for pseudoelastic NiTi shape memory alloy

Xiaofei Ju et al.

Summary: A crystal plasticity-based constitutive model is developed to describe the thermomechanical behavior of pseudoelastic NiTi single crystal. The model considers all inelastic mechanisms influencing the fatigue behavior of NiTi shape memory alloys and introduces new internal variables and evolution laws to reproduce the main features of anisotropic cyclic deformation of pseudoelastic NiTi single crystal.

Plastic deformation mechanisms that explain hot-rolling textures in Nickel-Titanium

Shivram Kashyap Sridhar et al.

Summary: Plastic deformation of B2 Nickel Titanium is primarily attributed to {110}<001> slip and {114}<221> deformation twinning. The hot-worked texture of these alloys is defined by a {111}<vuw> gamma fiber and {hkl}<110> partial alpha fiber. The Visco-Plastic Self Consistent (VPSC) model is used to establish relationships between microscopic slip and twin activity with the observed macroscopic hot-rolling texture, providing valuable insights for modeling NiTi austenite plasticity.

Effects of texture on the functional and structural fatigue of a NiTi shape memory alloy

William S. LePage et al.

Summary: The study revealed that crystallographic texture significantly affects the fatigue performance of NiTi sheet, with strong orientation-dependent mechanisms of plasticity, transformation, and twinning on both functional and structural fatigue. Under stress-controlled cycling, tension along textures similar to that of the TD demonstrated better fatigue performance.

Dissecting functional degradation in NiTi shape memory alloys containing amorphous regions via atomistic simulations

Won-Seok Ko et al.

Summary: The study used molecular dynamics simulations to understand the functional degradation of nano-scaled NiTi shape memory alloys containing amorphous regions. The influence of amorphous-like grain boundaries or surface regions on the mechanical response under cyclic compression was revealed. The degraded superelasticity under cyclic loading was attributed to accumulated plastic deformation and retained martensite from a synergetic contribution of amorphous and crystalline regions, with proposed methods for recovery and sustainable operation.

Summary: This study improved the fatigue resistance of NiTi shape memory alloys by utilizing a hybrid heterogenous nanostructure, producing a superelastic nanocomposite with high recoverable strain and yield strength. The synergy of nanosized amorphous and crystalline phases at the nanoscale was found to enhance properties, making it an effective method to improve fatigue resistance and strength of the alloys.

Effect of microstructure on fatigue of superelastic NiTi wires

Ondrej Tyc et al.

Summary: The superelastic fatigue tests of NiTi wires with different nanocrystalline microstructures showed that wires with smaller grains had shorter fatigue life. The dependency of fatigue life on microstructure and test temperature may be rationalized by considering the shielding effect of plastic deformation and deformation twinning ahead of advancing fatigue cracks. Increasing test temperature led to a decrease in fatigue life.

Ultrahigh cycle fatigue deformation of polycrystalline NiTi micropillars

Peng Hua et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that micropillar polycrystalline superelastic NiTi has a longer fatigue life under compressive stresses of 1 GPa and 1.5 GPa compared to bulk polycrystalline NiTi samples. This is attributed to the elimination of internal micro-voids and surface scratches in the micropillars, which suppress crack nucleation and propagation mechanisms.
