Line-length-dependent dislocation glide in refractory multi-principal element alloys

Shuozhi Xu et al.

Summary: This study uses atomistic simulations to investigate the dislocation glide behavior in two refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs), MoNbTi and NbTiZr, and compares it with pure metals. The results show that the length dependence of critical stress for dislocations becomes negligible in RMPEAs due to the change in dislocation behavior, and the critical stress anisotropy among different slip planes and character angles is substantially reduced compared to pure metals.

Size-dependent yield stress in ultrafine-grained polycrystals: A multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics study

Songjiang Lu et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of grain size and dislocation source properties on the yield stress of ultrafine-grained polycrystals using three-dimensional multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics. The simulation demonstrates a nonmonotonic dependency of flow stress on dislocation source length and deviations from the classical Hall-Petch relationship in the grain size dependence of yield stress. The study provides insights into the controlling factors of yield stress in the ultrafine-grained regime and proposes a theoretical model to explain the combined effects of source length, grain size, and initial dislocation density.

Line tension induced character angle dependence of dislocation mobility in FCC alloys

Ryan B. Sills et al.

Summary: The character angle dependence of dislocation-solute interactions in a random Fe0.70Ni0.11Cr0.19 alloy was explored through molecular dynamics simulations, showing that the activation area in this alloy is governed by dislocation line tension rather than the dislocation-solute interaction itself. This finding motivates further research into the line geometry of dislocations in solid solutions.

The interaction mechanisms between dislocations and nano-precipitates in CuFe alloys: A molecular dynamic simulation

Hongwei Bao et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the interaction mechanisms between dislocations and nano-precipitates in CuFe alloys. The simulations revealed that nano-precipitates can both promote twinning deformation and dislocation gliding away from themselves, as well as prevent dislocations from moving towards them. A hybrid model was developed to demonstrate the strengthening effects of nano-precipitates, with an optimized size obtained.

Crystal plasticity simulation of in-grain microstructural evolution during large deformation of IF-steel

Karo Sedighiani et al.

Summary: High-resolution three-dimensional crystal plasticity simulations were used to investigate deformation heterogeneity and microstructure evolution during cold rolling of interstitial free (IF-) steel. The simulations showed two types of strain localization features, river patterns with large strain accumulation and localized in-grain shear bands. The evolution of in-grain orientation gradients, misorientation features, dislocation density, kernel average misorientation, and stress in major texture components were also discussed.

Multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics study of gradient nano-grained materials

Songjiang Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of gradient nano-grained (GNG) aluminum using three-dimensional multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD). The results show that GNG samples exhibit higher yield stress and strain hardening compared to the rule of mixtures, indicating a synergetic strengthening effect. The study also establishes a theoretical model that successfully describes the Bauschinger effect in GNG and uniform nano-grained (UNG) samples based on the evolution of dislocations during unloading.

The mechanics and physics of high-speed dislocations: a critical review

Benat Gurrutxaga-Lerma et al.

Summary: High speed dislocations have long been identified as the dominant feature governing the plastic response of crystalline materials under high strain rates. Despite decades of study, their role in materials response remains elusive. This article reviews experimental and theoretical efforts to address this issue, focusing on the competing theoretical accounts, their underlying hypothesis, insights, and shortcomings, with suggestions for key developments in future research.

Configurational force on a dynamic dislocation with localized oscillation

Soon Kim et al.

Summary: Using a discrete lattice dynamics method, this study theoretically proves that the J integral is not path-independent in practice even under uniform motion, due to the generation of phonons during dislocation motion. The drag force produced by the generation of phonons disturbs the dislocation motion, leading to a deviation in the J integral around the moving dislocation compared to the stationary one. This work derives the drag force for each oscillation mode and reveals that the anti-symmetric oscillation mode mainly contributes to the drag force at high dislocation velocity, which can reproduce the dislocation velocity-stress curve.

Prediction of shear strength of cluster-strengthened aluminum with multi-scale approach describing transition from cutting to bypass of precipitates by dislocations

E. V. Fomin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the strength of clusters in aluminum alloy with copper content ranging from 20-100% depends on the number of copper atoms rather than the direct influence of copper concentration. Introducing copper-containing clusters into aluminum alloy can reduce the inhomogeneity of plastic deformation and aligns with experimental results.

A discrete dislocation dynamics study of precipitate bypass mechanisms in nickel-based superalloys

Sabyasachi Chatterjee et al.

Summary: Order strengthening in nickel-based superalloys is related to the additional stress required for dislocations to bypass gamma' precipitates in the gamma matrix. Various bypass mechanisms have been identified depending on operating conditions and microstructure, transitioning from shearing and looping to climb bypass as conditions change. A hybrid mechanism may also operate, supported by indirect experimental evidence.

Single layer graphene controlled surface and bulk indentation plasticity in copper

F. Bahrami et al.

Summary: Graphene reinforcement has been studied for its impact on the mechanical properties of metals, showing earlier and shorter plastic indentation responses compared to systems without graphene. Atomic force microscopy reveals smoother pile-ups with graphene, while transmission electron microscopy shows more diffuse and homogeneous dislocation activity in the presence of graphene. The collective dislocation mechanisms are dominantly controlled by the strong back stress caused by the graphene barrier.

Stacking fault energy in concentrated alloys

Mulaine Shih et al.

Summary: This study revisits the meaning of stacking fault energy (SFE) and the assumptions of equilibrium dissociation of lattice dislocations in concentrated alloys, showing that SFE in pure metals is a unique value, but in alloys it has a distribution of values depending on the local atomic environment. By using atomistic simulations in a model NiCo alloy, researchers found that even the upper bound of SFE distribution alone cannot satisfy the force balance in some cases, indicating the key importance of the dislocation/solute interaction for the accurate assessment of SFE in alloys beyond dilute limit.
