A combination of sugar esters and chitosan to promote in vivo wound care

Mattia Tiboni et al.

Summary: Researchers have been exploring innovative green materials made from renewable natural substances, such as chitosans and biosurfactants, for formulation needs. These biopolymers possess biocompatibility, biodegradability, functionality, and cost-effectiveness. They have shown potential for wound dressing to aid in physiological wound healing, which involves oxidative damage, inflammation, and infection risks. The study synthesized different sugar esters in combination with chitosan and sucrose laurate and evaluated their cytocompatibility, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. The combination showed superior wound healing prospects and restoration of the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway.

Ferulic acid nanocapsules as a promising treatment modality for colorectal cancer: Preparation and in vitro/in vivo appraisal

Riham El-Gogary et al.

Summary: Ferulic acid, a polyphenolic compound, can be encapsulated in lipid nanocapsules to improve its solubility and bioavailability, showing promising anticancer activity against colorectal cancer cells. The lipidic nanocapsules of ferulic acid exhibit stronger inhibitory effect on cell proliferation compared to the polymeric nanocapsules, and induce apoptosis.

Diversifying the skin cancer-fighting worthwhile frontiers: How relevant are the itraconazole/ascorbyl palmitate nanovectors?

Caroline Lamie et al.

Summary: Repurposing existing drugs to fight malignant neoplasms is a promising approach for cancer treatment. In this study, researchers successfully utilized nanovehiculation and optimization techniques to repurpose itraconazole (ITZ) and formulated it as ascorbyl palmitate (AP) aspasomes. The optimized aspasomes showed excellent characteristics and stability, and the aspasomal cream demonstrated potent anticancer effects in a mouse model. The use of AP also enhanced the cytotoxicity of ITZ. This research provides a foundation for future clinical translation and commercialization.

Improvement of the multi-performance biocharacteristics of cordycepin using BiloNiosome-core/chitosan-shell hybrid nanocarriers

Warut Kengkittipat et al.

Summary: A hybrid nanocarrier system comprising biloniosome-core/chitosan-shell was developed to enhance the bioavailability of cordycepin. The system showed enhanced mucoadhesive characteristics, stability in gastric fluid, and increased permeability across the intestinal barrier. Cordycepin-loaded HNCs demonstrated effective anti-cancer activity in both 2D cell cultures and 3D multi-cellular spheroids of colon cancer cells. Quantitative real time PCR analysis revealed the mechanism by which cordycepin HNCs induce apoptosis in cancer cells. This study suggests that hybrid nanocarrier systems could be a promising strategy for improving the bio-characteristics of cordycepin as a potential anti-cancer agent for colorectal cancer chemotherapy.

Tacrolimus-loaded chitosan-coated nanostructured lipid carriers: preparation, optimization and physicochemical characterization

Somayeh Dasineh et al.

Summary: Tacrolimus-loaded chitosan-coated nanostructured lipid carriers (CCNLCs) were successfully prepared to overcome the poor solubility and low bioavailability issues commonly associated with peroral administration of the drug. These carriers exhibited sustained release patterns, with chitosan coating attenuating the burst effect and promoting extended drug release. The study demonstrated the potential of CCNLCs as a promising approach to improve the bioavailability of tacrolimus.

Oral delivery of metformin by chitosan nanoparticles for polycystic kidney disease

Jonathan Wang et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles synthesized from chitosan showed promising mucoadhesive and permeation capabilities in vitro, with improved controlled release and serum delivery over 24 hours. Loading metformin into chitosan nanoparticles resulted in lower cyst burden in a PKD murine model, demonstrating good tolerance and kidney health. This study presents a novel, oral nanoformulation for chronic diseases like PKD, building upon previous chitosan-based drug delivery approaches.
