Serotonin transporter availability increases in patients recovering from a depressive episode

Summary: Using [C-11]MADAM positron emission tomography, this study examined the cerebral concentration of serotonin transporter in patients with major depressive disorder before and after treatment. The findings suggest that the observed differences likely reflect the depressive state rather than a permanent trait, as patients showed an increase in cerebral serotonin transporter availability following symptom alleviation. This sheds new light on the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder.
