Pax7+ Satellite Cells in Human Skeletal Muscle After Exercise: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Luthfia Dewi et al.

Summary: This study provides a quantitative estimate of the changes in Pax7(+) muscle stem cells and circulating CD34(+) bone marrow stem cells in humans following acute exercise. The results show that Pax7(+) cells in skeletal muscle increase significantly after resistance exercise, while circulating CD34(+) cells also increase after both resistance exercise and aerobic exercise but quickly return to baseline levels.

Control of satellite cell function in muscle regeneration and its disruption in ageing

Pedro Sousa-Victor et al.

Summary: Satellite cells are skeletal muscle stem cells that are mostly dormant and reactivate upon muscle damage. Their activation and differentiation are regulated by intrinsic and niche signals, with age-related deregulation leading to impaired muscle regeneration.

Summary: This study successfully established methods for deriving skeletal muscle cells from human pluripotent stem cells and engineered a functional human skeletal muscle organoid and engineered skeletal muscle with regeneration-competent satellite-like cells. Contractile performance of the engineered muscle was further enhanced by thyroid hormone treatment.

Transcriptional control of macrophage inflammatory shift during skeletal muscle regeneration

Gaetan Juban

Summary: This study focuses on the molecular pathways controlling macrophage inflammatory shift during skeletal muscle regeneration, highlighting the transcriptional changes, signaling pathways, metabolic changes, and transcription factors involved. Failure of inflammation resolution in chronic diseases can lead to fibrosis and alteration of muscle function.
