Nutritional immunity: the battle for nutrient metals at the host-pathogen interface

Caitlin C. Murdoch et al.

Summary: Trace metals play essential roles in the interactions between bacterial pathogens and animal hosts. They promote enzyme catalysis and stabilize reaction intermediates, while also preventing bacterial proliferation. The cell-specific and tissue-specific roles of distinct trace metals in shaping bacterial infections have implications for future research and new therapeutic development.

Zinc-binding metallophores protect Pseudomonas aeruginosa from calprotectin-mediated metal starvation

Serena Ammendola et al.

Summary: The ability of Pseudomona aeruginosa to produce a metallophore that can extract metal from zinc-binding proteins contributes to its proliferation in zinc-poor environments. The bacteria exhibit resistance to the antimicrobial activity of calprotectin, a metal-sequestering protein. Nicotianamine, a molecule similar to the metallophore pseudopaline, can promote metal acquisition even in the presence of calprotectin. Metallophores released by bacteria in response to zinc deficiency can extract protein-bound metal, potentially increasing resistance to calprotectin.

Zebrafish: An Attractive Model to Study Staphylococcus aureus Infection and Its Use as a Drug Discovery Tool

Sari Rasheed et al.

Summary: Non-mammalian in vivo disease models, specifically zebrafish, are popular in early drug discovery due to advantages such as optical transparency, small genome size, and low cost. This review focuses on zebrafish models of Staphylococcus aureus infection used in drug discovery, disease pathogenesis, and virulence studies, comparing them to invertebrate models.

Phages as immunomodulators and their promising use as anti-inflammatory agents in a cftr loss-of-function zebrafish model

Marco Cafora et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the phage cocktail exhibits anti-inflammatory effects in cystic fibrosis animal models, reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory markers. This anti-inflammatory effect is mainly achieved through the activation of the Toll-like Receptor pathway, and the phages significantly reduce neutrophil migration after acute inflammatory induction.

Animal and Cell Culture Models for Cystic Fibrosis Which Model Is Right for Your Application?

Alexandra McCarron et al.

Summary: Over the past 30 years, various CF animal models have been generated for research, using different species such as mice, pigs, and zebrafish. While the availability of diverse animal models is advantageous, it also adds complexity to the decision-making process in selecting the right model. This review discusses the characteristics and considerations for choosing an appropriate CF animal model, along with the potential use of in vitro systems as alternatives.

Zebrafish Embryo Infection Model to Investigate Pseudomonas aeruginosa Interaction With Innate Immunity and Validate New Therapeutics

Stephane Pont et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic human pathogen responsible for acute infections and a major cause of mortality in CF patients. The zebrafish embryo model is a powerful tool to study P. aeruginosa pathogenesis and host immune response, especially in a CF context.
