The impact of oxidative stress on reproduction: a focus on gametogenesis and fertilization

R. John Aitken et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the impact of oxidative stress on reproductive processes, including both physiological regulation and pathophysiology. It outlines the chemical nature of reactive oxygen species (ROS), their interaction with cells, and their effects on cellular function and genetic integrity. The article also discusses the mechanisms by which ROS generation overwhelms the cells' antioxidant defense mechanisms, focusing on gametogenesis and fertilization within the male and female reproductive systems. Additionally, the article examines the role of external factors in exacerbating oxidative stress and impairing reproductive competence, emphasizing the importance of personalized treatments based on a deeper understanding of the nature, source, magnitude, and location of such stress within the reproductive system.

In vitro versus cryo-induced capacitation of bovine spermatozoa, part 1: Structural, functional, and oxidative similarities and differences

Filip Benko et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the range of cell damage and cryocapacitation in bovine spermatozoa following cryopreservation. The results showed that cryopreservation led to a significant decrease in sperm motility, mitochondrial membrane potential, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate concentration. It also resulted in decreased membrane and acrosome integrity, increased DNA fragmentation, and increased necrotic cells. Following capacitation, the number of cells undergoing acrosome reaction significantly increased. Changes in the oxidative profile were also observed.

Relationships between Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress in Seminal Plasma and Sperm Motility in Bulls before and after Cryopreservation

Veronica Vigolo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress biomarkers in seminal plasma and sperm motility in bulls before and after cryopreservation. The results demonstrated that higher concentrations of oxidative protein products (AOPP) and thiols in seminal plasma were positively related to higher motility of fresh ejaculates, while they did not affect the motility parameters of frozen-thawed semen. These findings provide an alternative perspective on the relationship between sperm motility and seminal plasma composition.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different semen diluents on the quality of frozen semen from Limousin bulls. It found that TEY, TEYSM, and Andromed (R) diluents performed equally well, with better results than SMEY diluent, but SMEY diluent is still suitable for artificial insemination.

CRYOCAPACITATION AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH OXIDATIVE FEATURES IN CRYOPRESERVED BOVINE SPERMATOZOA

Filip Benko et al.

Summary: The goal of this research was to evaluate the impact of cryopreservation on the antioxidant activity, lipid peroxidation, and protein carbonylation in bovine spermatozoa and its connection with the progress of cryocapacitation. The study found that cryopreservation significantly decreased sperm motility and increased the proportion of acrosome-reacted spermatozoa. Furthermore, cryopreservation led to a decrease in total antioxidant capacity and an increase in protein oxidation and lipid peroxidation levels in frozen-thawed bovine spermatozoa.
