Research Advances in the Mutual Mechanisms Regulating Response of Plant Roots to Phosphate Deficiency and Aluminum Toxicity

Weiwei Chen et al.

Summary: This review paper summarizes the mutual mechanisms by which plants deal with aluminum toxicity and phosphorus starvation. It explores the roles of factors such as organic acids, plant-growth-promoting bacteria, transcription factors, transporters, hormones, and cell wall-related kinases in root development and root system architecture remodeling. These mechanisms play a determinant role in improving phosphorus use efficiency and aluminum resistance on acidic soils.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and abscisic acid mediate programmed cell death induced by aluminum toxicity in soybean root tips

Junjun Huang et al.

Summary: Aluminum-induced programmed cell death is mainly mediated by G6PDH regulating NADPH oxidase-dependent ROS production, with ABA acting upstream of G6PDH in this process.

Silicon prevents aluminum from entering root tip by promoting formation of root border cells in rice

Zhuoxi Xiao et al.

Summary: The study found that silicon can alleviate the toxicity of aluminum on RBCs under aluminum stress by increasing the degree of pectin methylesterification, maintaining more RBCs around the root tip, forming Si-Al complexes, promoting mucilage secretion, and forming a protective sheath to prevent aluminum from diffusing into the root tip.

Different antioxidant regulation mechanisms in response to aluminum-induced oxidative stress in Eucalyptus species

Yanhong Liang et al.

Summary: Forest ecosystems are important for environmental protection and ecological balance. This study found that Eucalyptus urophylla showed stronger adaptability to aluminum stress compared to E. grandis or E. tereticornis, which was attributed to higher antioxidant enzyme activity, non-enzymatic antioxidant content, and lower membrane lipid peroxidation. The hybrid offspring of E. urophylla x E. grandis inherited the outstanding adaptability to aluminum stress from E. urophylla, suggesting that aluminum tolerance is highly heritable and can be selected in Eucalyptus breeding. The results also indicated that the response of Eucalyptus to aluminum stress may vary over time and be related to changes in ROS elimination and accumulation.

Metabolic acclimation supports higher aluminium-induced secretion of citrate and malate in an aluminium-tolerant hybrid clone of Eucalyptus

Wannian Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of Eucalyptus clones to aluminum toxicity, with findings showing that the aluminum-tolerant clone G9 exhibited earlier and greater secretion of organic acids compared to the aluminum-sensitive clone W4. Enhanced activities of enzymes involved in organic acid metabolism were associated with the increased secretion of citrate in G9, contributing to aluminum detoxification.

Silicon relieves aluminum-induced inhibition of cell elongation in rice root apex by reducing the deposition of aluminum in the cell wall

Zhuoxi Xiao et al.

Summary: This study revealed that silicon can alleviate aluminum-induced inhibition of cell elongation and oxidative damage in rice roots, reducing aluminum content in the cell wall. Silicon also affects pectin methylesterase activity and gene expression, thus increasing pectin methylesterification and reducing hemicellulose content in the cell wall. Overall, silicon plays a crucial role in decreasing aluminum accumulation in the root cell wall, thus mitigating aluminum stress in rice.
