Comparative accuracy of biomarkers for the prediction of hospital-acquired acute kidney injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Heng-Chih Pan et al.

Summary: This study compared the predictive performance of different biomarkers for acute kidney injury (AKI). The biomarkers containing NGAL showed the best predictive accuracy for the occurrence of AKI, especially in medically treated patients. However, the predictive performance of urinary NGAL was limited in surgical patients, and urinary NGAL/creatinine seemed to be the most accurate biomarkers in these patients. All of the biomarkers had similar predictive performance in critically ill patients.

Enhanced Detection of Cardiac Surgery-Associated Acute Kidney Injury by a Composite Biomarker Panel in Patients with Normal Preoperative Kidney Function

Jurij Matija Kalisnik et al.

Summary: This study found that a combination of NGAL, CysC, and creatinine can enable the early detection of acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery. By measuring the concentrations and sequential changes of these biomarkers, it is possible to predict renal injury in patients more accurately, with a sensitivity of 77% and specificity of 68%.

Assessment and Prognosis in CSA-AKI Using Novel Kidney Injury Biomarkers: A Prospective Observational Study

Jakub Udzik et al.

Summary: This study discusses the importance of novel kidney injury biomarkers in the early diagnosis of cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury and in predicting long-term postoperative kidney function. It was found that intraoperative hypoperfusion due to hypovolemia is a major factor causing kidney damage. The use of biomarkers such as IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha, MMP-9, and NGAL show promise in diagnosing acute kidney injury and assessing long-term kidney function post-surgery.

CSA-AKI: Incidence, Epidemiology, Clinical Outcomes, and Economic Impact

Alan Schurle et al.

Summary: CSA-AKI, a common complication following cardiac surgery, relies on the loss of renal function for diagnosis. New diagnostic injury biomarkers have shown promise in identifying renal injury risk early. Treatment is limited to supportive care, and costs are difficult to estimate accurately, but are increasing with the global rise in cardiac surgery volume.
