Review: Serum Biomarkers of Lung Fibrosis in Interstitial Pneumonia with Autoimmune Features-What Do We Already Know?

Ewa Miadlikowska et al.

Summary: Interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features (IPAF) is a type of interstitial lung disease with varied prognosis and course. Currently, there is a lack of specific and sensitive biomarkers for predicting disease progression, monitoring natural history, and stratifying patients for treatment. Several studies have focused on circulating biomarkers and assessed their diagnostic and prognostic value in interstitial lung diseases. However, a meta-analysis of pulmonary fibrosis biomarkers in IPAF is still lacking due to the heterogeneity in research methodology and analyzed groups.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (an Update) and Progressive Pulmonary Fibrosis in Adults An Official ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT Clinical Practice Guideline

Ganesh Raghu et al.

Summary: This article provides updates on the guidelines for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and addresses the progression of pulmonary fibrosis in patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) other than IPF. The recommendations are based on consensus and systematic reviews, aiming to provide evidence-based guidance for clinicians.

Summary: This study investigated the role of angiogenic T cells (TAng) in interstitial lung disease associated with autoimmune disease (AD-ILD+), and found that TAng could be potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of ILD.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Telomeres

Alba Mulet et al.

Summary: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease with unknown causes, which has a poor prognosis. Telomeric shortening may play an important role in its pathogenesis, but mutations in telomere-related genes are not always present. Telomere shortening can serve as a biomarker for disease prognosis independently of other clinical factors.

Role of MUC1 rs4072037 polymorphism and serum KL-6 levels in patients with antisynthetase syndrome

Sara Remuzgo-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the presence of MUC1 rs4072037 C allele increases the risk of ASSD and it could be a useful genetic biomarker for the differential diagnosis between ASSD-ILD+ and IPF patients.

Gremlin-1 for the Differential Diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Versus Other Interstitial Lung Diseases: A Clinical and Pathophysiological Analysis

Yoichiro Aoshima et al.

Summary: Measuring serum gremlin-1 concentrations can help differentiate between IPF and non-IPF ILDs, with gremlin-1 being broadly upregulated in IPF lungs and potentially playing a role in the pathogenesis of IPF.

Role of VEGF Polymorphisms in the Susceptibility and Severity of Interstitial Lung Disease

Sara Remuzgo-Martinez et al.

Summary: By genotyping 436 Caucasian ILD patients and 536 healthy controls, the study found that VEGF may not play a significant role in ILD, but rs1570360 could potentially influence the severity in female patients and lead to a worse outcome in IIP patients.

Serum Biomarkers in Differential Diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Connective Tissue Disease-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease

Eva Cabrera Cesar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential value of AGE, AOPP, and MMP7 as diagnostic biomarkers in IPF and CTD-ILD, showing that these biomarkers can differentiate between ILD patients and healthy controls, with AGE being particularly effective in distinguishing CTD-ILD patients. Further multicentre studies are needed to understand the role of AGE in differential diagnosis.
