Stability and release mechanisms of double emulsions loaded with bioactive compounds; a critical review

Fatemeh Heidari et al.

Summary: Double emulsions, dispersion systems where liquid droplets of one dispersed liquid are further dispersed in another liquid, are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries for co-encapsulation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. However, their stability and release mechanisms pose challenges, and studying factors affecting stability and release can help optimize their formulation for different industries.

A multivariable analysis of the contribution of socioeconomic and environmental factors to blood culture Escherichia Coli resistant to fluoroquinolones in high- and middle-income countries

Amy Booth et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of various environmental and socioeconomic variables as well as markers of antimicrobial use on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) levels in countries of different income levels. The results showed that corruption is a strong predictor of AMR, indicating the influence of socioeconomic factors. The quality of sanitation facilities and healthcare access and quality were also found to be significantly associated with AMR levels.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Enhancing the Antibiofilm Activity of β-1,3-Glucanase-Functionalized Nanoparticles Loaded With Amphotericin B Against Candida albicans Biofilm

Yulong Tan et al.

Summary: Traditional antifungal therapies are insufficient to treat Candida biofilm-related infections. In this study, chitosan nanoparticles loaded with Amphotericin B and functionalized with beta-1,3-glucanase were found to effectively inhibit Candida albicans biofilm growth, disassemble the biofilm matrix, and eradicate biofilms from clinical isolates, suggesting their potential for the treatment of Candida biofilm-related infections.

Synergism between the Synthetic Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Peptide (SAAP)-148 and Halicin

Miriam E. van Gent et al.

Summary: Using a deep learning approach, researchers discovered a new antibiotic called halicin. Their study compared the effectiveness of halicin with a synthetic antibacterial and antibiofilm peptide (SAAP)-148 in killing antimicrobial-resistant bacteria like Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Staphylococcus aureus. While SAAP-148 outperformed halicin in killing planktonic bacteria in biologically relevant media and 3D human infection models, both agents showed equal effectiveness against bacteria residing in biofilms. Additionally, the study revealed potential synergistic and additive interactions between SAAP-148 and halicin, making their combination a promising treatment for infections that are not effectively treatable with current antibiotics.

A comparison of acyl-moieties for noncovalent functionalization of PLGA and PEG-PLGA nanoparticles with a cell-penetrating peptide

Omar Paulino da Silva Filho et al.

Summary: Efficient intracellular drug delivery in nanomedicine relies heavily on inducing cellular uptake, which can be achieved through conjugation of nanoparticles with cell-penetrating peptides. Functionalizing nanoparticles with a lactoferrin-derived cell-penetrating peptide, particularly through palmitoylation, enhances cellular uptake and stability, making it a promising strategy for drug delivery.
