Decoyinine Induced Resistance in Rice against Small Brown Planthopper Laodelphax striatellus

Amir Zaman Shah et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the use of decoyinine as a seed treatment significantly reduces the fecundity of the small brown planthopper (SBPH) and improves rice resistance. Decoyinine enhances rice defense against SBPH by stimulating plant defensive responses, making it a potential environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pest control.

The Non-Classical Crystallization Mechanism of a Composite Biogenic Guanine Crystal

Avital Wagner et al.

Summary: By studying guanine crystal formation in spiders, it is revealed that guanine crystallization is a non-classical, multistep process involving nucleation of ordered nanogranules, growth through attachment of nanogranules into platelets, and relaxation of structural defects to form single crystals. The findings provide insights on how organisms control the morphology and optical properties of molecular crystals.

Biogenic Guanine Crystals Are Solid Solutions of Guanine and OtherPurine Metabolites

Noam Pinsk et al.

Summary: Through studying biogenic guanine crystals with different morphologies, it is found that these crystals are actually molecular alloys of guanine, hypoxanthine, and sometimes xanthine, rather than pure crystals. Dopants do not affect the morphology of guanine crystals, but help animals build physiologically more affordable crystals from mixtures of metabolically available purines.

Contents of photosynthetic pigments and ratios of chlorophyll a/b and chlorophylls to carotenoids (a plus b)/(x+c) in C4 plants as compared to C3 plants

H. K. Lichtenthaler et al.

Summary: C4 plants have higher Chl a/b ratios compared to C3 plants, with sugar maize having the highest ratio. During autumnal senescence, C4 plants show a faster decline in chlorophyll content, resulting in higher Chl a/b ratios.

Acaricidal properties of the selected components, blends and essential oils of species of genus Protium (Burseraceae) against Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae)

Flavia de Souza Born et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and acaricidal properties of essential oils from Protium aracouchine and Protium giganteum. The results show that spathulenol and beta-caryophyllene are the major constituents in these oils. Both oils exhibit toxicity to Tetranychus urticae through fumigation and residual contact, with the P. aracouchine oil being more toxic. Beta-caryophyllene and spathulenol are found to contribute significantly to the acaricidal effects.

Priming of rice seed with decoyinine enhances resistance against the brown planthopper Nilparvata lugens

Chao Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that pretreatment of rice seeds with DCY can enhance the resistance of rice plants to BPH. The results showed that rice plants grown from DCY-pretreated seed displayed higher resistance to BPH, and the reproduction capacity and population size of BPH on these plants significantly decreased. Seed priming with DCY also affected the ovary development and the expression level of vitellogenin in BPH, and decreased their feeding and oviposition preference towards rice.

Mechanisms and management of acaricide resistance for Tetranychus urticae in agroecosystems

Adekunle W. Adesanya et al.

Summary: The two-spotted spider mite poses a constant threat to sustainable production of economically important crops globally, with management heavily reliant on synthetic acaricides, which the mite has rapidly developed resistance to. Limited studies have been conducted on genetic changes related to acaricide resistance in T. urticae, necessitating further research for successful integrated mite management programs. Understanding the temporal and spatial characteristics of acaricide-resistant phenotypes and their underlying mechanisms is crucial for designing effective resistance management programs within various agroecosystems.

Summary: This study reveals the complete pathway leading to the biosynthesis of angustmycin A in Streptomyces and successfully achieves the heterologous production of angustmycin A in E. coli. These results expand the enzymatic repertoire regarding natural product biosynthesis, and pave the way for rational and rapid discovery of other angustmycin-related antibiotics.

Summary: The study found that the body color divergence between the two forms of spider mites is caused by different expressions of pigmentation-related genes, and a novel cytochrome P450 gene may play a role in regulating red-orange body color.
