A Review on Biomaterials for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology: From Past to Present

Grzegorz Szczesny et al.

Summary: The principal features essential for the success of an orthopaedic implant are its shape, dimensional accuracy, and adequate mechanical properties. The clinical usefulness of biomaterials in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal trauma surgery depends on the combination of mechanical and biological properties. Materials commonly used for these applications include stainless steel, cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys, ceramics, polyethylene, and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. This study reviews the properties of commonly used materials and discusses potential directions for future implant development, with an emphasis on developing advanced personalised implants.

Pathophysiology and Emerging Molecular Therapeutic Targets in Heterotopic Ossification

Favour Felix-Ilemhenbhio et al.

Summary: Heterotopic ossification refers to the formation of bone in tissues where it is not normally present. The disease can be caused by rare genetic forms or as a response to trauma. Research has identified various cell types and biological pathways involved in the pathogenesis of HO. Recent advances in molecular therapies have shown promise in treating and preventing this condition.

Enhanced ectopic bone formation by strontium-substituted calcium phosphate ceramics through regulation of osteoclastogenesis and osteoblastogenesis

Fuying Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of strontium on osteoclastogenesis and osteoblastogenesis during ectopic bone formation were investigated. Porous strontium-substituted biphasic calcium phosphate (Sr-BCP) and BCP ceramics were prepared with similar pore structures. In vitro results showed that Sr-BCP inhibited osteoclastic differentiation and promoted osteogenic differentiation. Similar results were observed in an in vivo study. Sr-BCP accelerated ectopic bone formation by suppressing osteoclastogenesis and promoting osteogenesis, possibly through the regulation of osteoblast-osteoclast coupling factors.

Enhanced osteogenesis and angiogenesis of calcium phosphate cement incorporated with zinc silicate by synergy effect of zinc and silicon ions

Teliang Lu et al.

Summary: The study incorporated zinc and silicate ions into calcium phosphate cement to obtain zinc silicate-modified CPCs with different contents. The addition of ZS increased compressive strength, prolonged setting time, and densified the structure of CPC. ZS/CPCs significantly promoted osteogenesis and angiogenesis, while restricting osteoclastogenesis, providing an appropriate microenvironment for immune cells.

Strontium-calcium phosphate hybrid cement with enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic properties for vascularised bone regeneration

Xiexing Wu et al.

Summary: A strontium-enhanced calcium phosphate hybrid cement (Sr-CPHC) was developed to improve the biological and physicochemical properties of CPC. Sr-CPHC exhibited longer initial setting time and higher compressive strength compared to CPC, showing enhanced cell activity and angiogenesis. In vivo evaluation demonstrated new bone formation in a rat model, indicating great potential for clinical applications in ischemic osteonecrosis and critical-size bone defects.
