Biosynthesis and the Roles of Plant Sterols in Development and Stress Responses

Yinglin Du et al.

Summary: Plant sterols are important in cell membrane and lipid rafts, playing key roles in plant development and stress resistance. Recent studies have focused on the biosynthesis pathway of plant sterols, but the regulation and accumulation of sterols are not well understood. This review summarizes and discusses the latest findings in plant sterols, including their biosynthesis, regulation, functions, and involvement in abiotic stress responses.

GhCYP710A1 Participates in Cotton Resistance to Verticillium Wilt by Regulating Stigmasterol Synthesis and Plasma Membrane Stability

Li Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the changes of sterol composition in cotton roots infected by Verticillium dahliae and identified the sterol C22-desaturase gene GhCYP710A1. By overexpressing and silencing the gene in cotton and ectopically expressing it in Arabidopsis, the researchers observed changes in sterol composition and resistance to Verticillium wilt in transgenic plants. The results suggest that GhCYP710A1 may be a target gene for cotton resistance breeding.

Radio-Protective Effects of Stigmasterol on Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Plants

Hebat-Allah A. Hussein et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of gamma radiation and stigmasterol on the growth and biochemical constituents of wheat plants. The results showed that gamma radiation had varying effects on plant growth and biochemical parameters, while the application of stigmasterol could alleviate the adverse effects of gamma radiation on wheat plants.

Changes in the Plant β-Sitosterol/Stigmasterol Ratio Caused by the Plant Parasitic Nematode Meloidogyne incognita

Alessandro Cabianca et al.

Summary: The study found that changes in sterols in important crops after infection with Meloidogyne incognita mainly manifest as a change in the beta-sitosterol/stigmasterol ratio, particularly an increase in beta-sitosterol and a decrease in stigmasterol in tomato, soybean, cucumber, and corn. Cholesterol levels increased in tomato, cucumber, and corn, while being often undetectable in uninfected plants. The expression of the sterol 22C-desaturase gene CYP710A11 in tomato was found to be consistent with the sterol profile after M. incognita infection, providing new insights into plant-nematode interactions.

The auxin-producing Bacillus thuringiensis RZ2MS9 promotes the growth and modifies the root architecture of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom)

Bruna Durante Batista et al.

Summary: The Bacillus thuringiensis strain RZ2MS9 can produce auxins that promote plant growth through two pathways for Indole acetic acid (IAA) production. Experimental results demonstrate that the application of this strain significantly increases the shoot dry weight of tomatoes, alters root architecture, and enhances root cell activity at the cellular level.
