In Vitro and In Vivo Bactericidal and Antibiofilm Efficacy of Alpha Mangostin Against Staphylococcus aureus Persister Cells

LewisOscar Felix et al.

Summary: Alpha mangostin exhibits antimicrobial activity against MRSA persisters and biofilms, causing membrane permeabilization and bacterial cell death. It also inhibits biofilm formation and attachment and down-regulates genes associated with persister cell and biofilm formation. In vivo experiments show that alpha mangostin increases the survival of MRSA-infected larvae. These findings contribute to our understanding of the antimicrobial activity and toxicity of this natural compound.

Synergistic Microbicidal Effect of AUR and PEITC Against Staphylococcus aureus Skin Infection

Haoran Chen et al.

Summary: The combination of auranofin and phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) has been found to enhance the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This combination treatment can prevent the emergence of auranofin resistance by increasing reactive oxygen species generation, disrupting bacterial cell structure, and inhibiting biofilm formation. In addition, this combination treatment effectively restores the susceptibility to auranofin and eliminates S. aureus pathogens, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

Bacteriophage Therapy for Staphylococcus Aureus Infections: A Review of Animal Models, Treatments, and Clinical Trials

Lucile Plumet et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus is a virulent human pathogen with antibiotic resistance, making it a major public health threat. Bacteriophage therapy, a non-antibiotic strategy, shows potential in treating S. aureus infections.

Different Antioxidative and Antiapoptotic Effects of Piceatannol and Resveratrol

Ryusuke Hosoda et al.

Summary: It was found that piceatannol provides better protection against mitochondrial reactive oxygen species through SIRT1- and NRF2/HO1-dependent mechanisms compared to resveratrol. The antioxidative and antiapoptotic effects mediated by NRF2/HO1 pathway could be an advantage of piceatannol over resveratrol for cell protection.

Autophagy in Staphylococcus aureus Infection

Mengyao Wang et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen that can colonize various host organisms and evade host immune defenses through its accessory gene regulatory system. Host autophagy, a clearance pathway, plays a role in degrading S. aureus, and understanding the interaction between autophagy and the pathogen can help improve infection control.

Diclofenac Resensitizes Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus to β-Lactams and Prevents Implant Infections

Shutao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that high-dose diclofenac inhibits the growth of MRSA without inducing drug-resistant mutations easily, while low-dose diclofenac can resensitize bacteria to beta-lactams and inhibit biofilm formation. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses indicate that diclofenac reduces the expression of genes and proteins associated with antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation. Murine implant infection models suggest that diclofenac combined with beta-lactams can substantially alleviate MRSA infections in vivo, offering promising applications for preventing perioperative infections.
