Tribological performance of micro textured surface machined by Nd:YAG laser with different incident angle

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fabrication of linear micro textures on cemented carbide surfaces using Nd:YAG laser at different incident angles. The results show that decreasing the incident angle reduces the depth of micro textures, laser machining temperature, and residual compressive stress. It also increases the width of the micro textures and surface roughness. The micro textured samples demonstrate improved friction performance, with the TS-60 samples showing the best results, reducing the wear rate and average coefficient of friction by approximately 71.1% and 63.2%, respectively.

Influence of sliding velocity on microscratch response of carbohydrate polymers by Berkovich indenter

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: Microscratch tests were conducted on polyamide (PA) and polypropylene (PP) to investigate the influence of sliding velocity on the microscratch response of carbohydrate polymers. It was found that both penetration depth and residual depth decrease nonlinearly with increasing sliding velocity, while elastic deformation dominates the total deformation during scratching. Residual scratch grooves, scratch friction coefficient, and lateral force under different sliding velocities can reveal the different friction mechanisms of PA and PP.

Investigation of chip formation, cutting force and surface roughness during orthogonal cutting of polytetrafluoroethylene

Zhi Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cutting performance of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) using orthogonal cutting experiments. Chip formation, cutting force, and surface quality were used to evaluate the influence of cutting parameters on cutting performance. The results showed that cutting depth had the most significant effect on cutting force, while cutting speed had the most obvious effect on surface roughness. An empirical mathematical model was developed to predict cutting force and surface roughness with good accuracy. The study suggests that higher cutting speed with a small cutting depth is ideal for ensuring the cutting performance and machining quality of PTFE.

Materials removal mechanism and multi modes feature for silicon carbide during scratching

Yuhua Huang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the multi modes features during the machining of SiC, using scratching experiments and atomistic simulations. The scratching force and acoustic emission signals were analyzed to distinguish different scratching modes. The localized stress distribution and morphology were analyzed using non-destructive birefringence analysis. Four scratching modes were identified and atomistic simulations were conducted to understand the underlying atom-level behaviors. A qualitative multi layers model was proposed to explain different material removal mechanisms.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.

Summary: This study investigates the specific impact of temperature on the deformation behaviors of brittle KDP crystal through nano indentation/scratch methods. The results show that increasing the temperature significantly decreases the hardness and Elastic modulus of KDP crystal, while greatly increasing the fracture toughness, indicating a higher ability of ductile deformation at elevated temperature. Additionally, the scratch length in ductile removal process is extended more than 4 times by increasing temperature, and the quantity and size of brittle features show a reducing trend with temperature increase.
