Environmental impact of extrusion-based additive manufacturing: generic model, power measurements and influence of printing resolution

Kateryna Kuzmenko et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the contribution of a concrete-printing robotic cell to climate change, specifically its embodied and operational impacts. By proposing a functional unit that relates material impact and process impact, the study finds that the relative climate change contribution of the printing process alone depends on its spatial resolution. The results suggest the existence of an optimal printing resolution that balances material saving and process-related climate change impact.

Filament geometry control in extrusion-based additive manufacturing of concrete: The good, the bad and the ugly

R. J. M. Wolfs et al.

Summary: Control of filament geometry is crucial in additive manufacturing to ensure quality, with potential issues of tearing or buckling. This study utilizes CFD simulations to analyze the impact of parameters in concrete printing processes, presenting analytical tools for tearing and buckling factors. By studying variations in printing processes, such as velocities and material properties, the risk of filament tearing and buckling during sharp turns is discussed.

Life cycle assessment of integrated additive-subtractive concrete 3D printing

Ivan Munoz et al.

Summary: 3D printing technology has a lower environmental impact in producing a single structural pillar compared to traditional methods, especially when only a few pillars need to be produced. However, when producing a higher number of pillars, the environmental impact of conventional production methods is similar to that of 3D printing, as the mould used in traditional production can be reused.

Environmental and economic assessment on 3D printed buildings with recycled concrete

Yilong Han et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impact and economic benefit of 3D printed buildings made of recycled concrete. It found that while 3D printing concrete construction has a larger environmental impact compared to traditional methods, it offers significant advantages in terms of cost efficiency, particularly for geometrically irregular buildings. Additionally, the cost of buildings made of recycled concrete decreases as the proportion of recycled aggregate increases.

Circularity indicator for residential buildings: Addressing the gap between embodied impacts and design aspects

Dario Cottafava et al.

Summary: In the European Union, the built environment accounts for over 25% of waste generation, emphasizing the need for circular practices. Current indicators focus on virgin materials, unrecoverable waste, and product lifetime, but a holistic methodology is still being developed. The study introduced new indicators combining material circularity, energy analysis, and design criteria, providing insights for different case studies in EU climate zones.

Mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories

Antoine Beylot et al.

Summary: This article proposes an approach to account for mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories, with the application to analyze the direct dissipation of mineral resources along the primary production of copper. The results show that the production of 1 kg of copper cathode generates 0.88 kg of direct dissipative flows of resources, primarily calcium carbonate, copper, and to a lower extent iron. The developed approach may change the interpretation of results regarding mineral resources in LCA and have implications on methodological aspects and data requirements.
