Life cycle assessment (LCA) on waste management options for derelict fishing gear

Falk Schneider et al.

Summary: This study assesses the potential environmental impacts of derelict fishing gear waste treatment options in Europe. Mechanical recycling and energy recovery are found to have the lowest environmental impacts, while syngas production and landfill disposal are not environmentally competitive. The study suggests that disposal of derelict fishing gear should be replaced with mechanical recycling or energy recovery, and marine litter prevention should also be emphasized for further reducing environmental impacts.

Life cycle inventory of plastics losses from seafood supply chains: Methodology and application to French fish products

Sumer S. Vaid et al.

Summary: The study proposes a methodology for quantifying plastic flows from the life cycle of seafood products to the environment and validates it using French fish products data. Results show that lost fishing gears and tire abrasion are the main sources of plastic losses, with mismanaged plastic packaging potentially causing significant environmental harm. Further research is needed to assess the related environmental impacts and identify eco-design solutions to reduce major plastic flows to the environment.

Material studies for the recycling of abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG)

Gunter Weissbach et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of recycling material from retrieved gillnets from the Baltic Sea, with a focus on pre-treatment to reduce mineral content. Analysis revealed various polymers and minerals in the material, with a pre-treatment process proving successful in reducing mineral content.

Volume-based assessment of coastal litter reveals a significant underestimation of marine litter from ocean-based activities in East Asia

Falk Schneider et al.

Summary: This study conducted a volume-based marine litter survey in Taiwan in 2020, revealing a high level of DFG pollution with approximately 70% coming from derelict fishing gear. The study calls for better domestic waste management practices and the introduction of an extended producer responsibility scheme for fishing gear.

Challenges and misperceptions around global fishing gear loss estimates

Kelsey Richardson et al.

Summary: ALDFG is a major source of marine debris globally, with significant socioeconomic and environmental impacts. Estimating the amount of ALDFG entering the ocean is crucial for managers and policy makers, but existing estimates have been found to be inaccurately cited for over a decade, highlighting the need for more accurate and refined estimations.

A framework for the assessment of marine litter impacts in life cycle impact assessment

John S. Woods et al.

Summary: Marine litter, especially plastic waste, is a growing environmental issue, with research and policies being developed to address it. Current life cycle assessment tools do not fully account for the impacts of plastic waste on the environment, highlighting the need for coordinated research efforts to fill this research gap.

Rapid-Survey Methodology to Assess Litter Volumes along Large River Systems-A Case Study of the Tamsui River in Taiwan

Falk Schneider et al.

Summary: A new citizen science bicycle survey was developed to assess riverine debris, covering 281.5 km of the Tamsui river system in Taiwan. The study revealed different litter densities at the river mouth and along the riverbanks further upstream, with derelict fishing gear and single-use plastics dominating different areas.
