Strategies to achieve a carbon neutral society: a review

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: The increasing global industrialization and over-exploitation of fossil fuels have resulted in higher greenhouse gas emissions, leading to rising global temperatures and environmental issues. Achieving net-zero carbon emissions requires a comprehensive approach involving renewable energy transition, development of negative emissions technologies, implementation of carbon trading and carbon tax, as well as changes in dietary habits, low-carbon agriculture, and improving waste management. It is also crucial to build resilient buildings and cities, adopt decentralized energy systems, and electrify the transportation sector.

Effects of the operation mode on the degradation behavior of anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers

Atif Khan Niaz et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different operation modes on the stability of anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) were investigated. It was found that the short periodic operation mode led to performance degradation due to ohmic resistance, while the long periodic operation mode resulted in better stability with constant resistance values. The study suggests that even small operating factors like rest time frequency can have a significant impact on cell stability.

Ashraf Abdel Haleem et al.

Summary: A new accelerated durability test (ADT) protocol was developed for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts to mimic renewable energy fluctuations. The protocol involves ON/OFF operation mode and different cathodic potentials for varying durations to evaluate catalyst durability. Results showed that degradation of the catalyst after ADT cycles depended on potential value and duration of the OFF step, with a 10-sec open-circuit potential step mitigating impact of energy fluctuations.
