Fluorinated ethylene-propylene/graphite composites reinforced with silicon carbide for the bipolar plates of fuel cells

Kwang Sang Park et al.

Summary: In this study, bipolar plates for fuel cell applications were prepared using fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP), graphite flakes (GFs), graphite nanoplates (GnPs), and silicon carbide (SiC) particles. It was found that incorporating SiC particles into the composites significantly improved their flexural strength, and the improved mechanical properties were attributed to the uniform dispersion of SiC particles and strong chemical bonding between different materials.

A review of composite bipolar plates in proton exchange membrane fuel cells: Electrical properties and gas permeability

Kwang Il Jeong et al.

Summary: Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) typically consist of various components, with bipolar plates (BPs) being critical due to their impact on volume, cost, and weight. Traditional materials like graphite and metallic BPs face challenges such as lack of mechanical strength or high density. Recently, composite BPs reinforced with carbon-based fillers have gained attention for their superior corrosion resistance and low density. This paper reviews the electrical conductivities, surface treatments, and gas permeability reduction methods of composite BPs.

Graphite-epoxy composites for fuel-cell bipolar plates: Wet vs dry mixing and role of the design of experiment in the optimization of molding parameters

Fabrizio Roncaglia et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental method for preparing graphite-epoxy composites suitable for manufacturing bipolar plates in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells. Wet mixing was found to be advantageous in achieving good electrical and mechanical properties, with the addition of a small percentage of carbon black as a secondary filler. Modeling the effects of molding parameters on a fixed-composition graphite-epoxy composite provided valuable information for future improvements, resulting in conductivity values exceeding US DOE requirements.
