Nanostructuring Matters: Stabilization of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of ZnCo2O4 by Zinc Leaching

Malenahalli H. Naveen et al.

Summary: Despite the extensive attention on cobalt oxide materials as efficient water splitting electrocatalysts, the understanding of their activity discrepancy remains elusive. This study demonstrated that stabilizing the internally generated oxygen evolution reaction (OER) active phase (oxyhydroxide) is crucial for ZnCo2O4 electrocatalysts. The leaching of Zn was found to be the driving force behind the near-surface transformation to the oxyhydroxide phase. The formation of the cobalt oxyhydroxide phase by the dissolution of Zn contributed to the good catalytic activity.
